San Antonio Snow

Well, it doesn't snow often in San Antonio, but it did last night. Not much, mind you, but there is a layer of ice underneath the dusting of snow. All expressways are closed. Our road crews don't really know how to handle snow and ice conditions and don't have the equipment to deal with it. And, drivers don't have the experience, so they just give up and close everything.

So, if you are coming this way today, be prepared for a mess.

The good news is it will warm up to 60 degrees tomorrow.

I know what you are saying. Last night in Dallas we got 5+ inches of the white stuff. Already had about an inch or so of sleet and ice on the ground. The drivers here are getting brave. They are trying to climb the ramps to the interchanges. Some are making it others are not. It's been below freezing here since Tuesday afternoon, not expected to go above untill Saturday afternoon. My suggestion is stay home if you can and keep warm.

Heard on the radio this morning from Steeler reporters down there, that Dallas FW area got 61/2" of snow and they have no salt or salt trucks.

We got ice in Houston. The beltway system is shut down, the overpasses are iced and the authorities are strongly recommending that no one should be on the roads unless absolutely necessary. 4 fatalities from traffic accidents reported so far, and tons of fender-bender accidents.

Metro closed down the Park and Ride system in Hosuton and the idiots are still trying to get places. The wrecker drivers are having a fine time.

At my work, they are always talking about the health and safety of the employees, yet they have not shut down operations in downtown Houston.

The 5+ inches I reported was at 4:30 this am. It's still snowing, so don'tknow what the final total will be. Yes, Dallas has sand trucks, and does not use salt except in very limited situations because of the corosiveness. They use MD 20 deicer and Magnesiem chloride deicer. They did recieve the loan of several snow plows from the Amarrilo area to help (mostly because of the SuberaBowl traffic). TXDOT says that they have over 9,000 lane miles to take care of, so they can't be everywhere at the same time. I think they're doing the best they can. Keep warm.
