Scotch Guard and awnings?

My almost 10yr old awning has developed a few leaks. Not large leaks, but there are several spots where rain seems to drip through.

I was thinking of taking a nice warm evening, extending my awning about 2', and then spraying it with Scotch Guard or some similar waterproofing spray, then extending it another 2' feet, move the step ladder...rinse and repeat until it's done.

Has anyone tried this approach to extending the life of the awning?...are there other products/methods out there that people have successfully used?

I'd like to get another year or two out of it if I can.

well you don't specify what fabric your awning is. Scotchguard doesn't last long in the outdoors especially a harsh environment. Assuming yours is an acrylic or Sunbrella fabric then i would use 303 Aerospace High Tech Fabric Guard. It's what Sunbrella Marine fabric is coated with new and what they recommend to recoat with after washing. You do have to do a thorough cleaning and let it dry before applying, your 2' idea won't work here. My boat tops lasted years without leaking or fading with this stuff.

Marine Tops and Covers Care and Cleaning: Sunbrella fabrics

My awning is an A&E.
Not sure what you mean by my 2' idea? That is just to spray the material on. I my awning is motorized, and doesn't "drop" down to give access to all of the fabric.
By unfurling just 2', I can spray that by moving my ladder a few times. When I get to the end, I'll open it up another 2' and make another pass. With the awning fully open, there's no way I can get to the section half way between the outside edge and the coach.

Scotch Guard makes a product for the outdoor use. I use it on my 15 year old acrylic awning, using the same method after cleaning and allowing it to dry.

While I have not used it yet, it is hard to think that there would be anything better than 303. For a less expensive alternative I would look to CampDry. I managed a backpacking store back in the day and it worked amazingly well.

Your A&E awning may be either vinyl or Acrylic fabric. The acrylic is porous and needs to have its waterproofing updated every several years. Use a waterproofing product intended for synthetic fabrics, e.g. the 303 Fabric Guard mentioned above. Some other brands are Kiwi Camp Dry, Scotchguard Outdoor Water Shield, Starbright Waterproof Fabric treatment, Aqua Armor and Nikwax.

If its vinyl, it needs no waterproofing and will only leak if there are holes or if there is a stitched seam and the thread has rotted away. You can fix holes with a vinyl repair cement such as VLP Liquid Vinyl Repair:
RV Awning Liquid Vinyl Repair -1 fl. oz.
