This isn't the case anymore in my industry (wine/hospitality/restaurants) in many areas. Starting wages of $20-$25 an hour are now common. Cooks and bakers at the Austin race (US Grand Prix) are starting at $35 hour, $45 if you have pastry skills. Austin is a seasonal temp job. It still remains a strenuous job.

Supply and demand, the backbone of Capitalism. Expect better wages this season. Don't settle.

* there are numerous negatives. One is that the work hours are very long, and the work is monotonous. Workers are on their feet for 10 hours or more, walking up to 12 miles per shift on concrete floors. Given the work environment, the risk of injury is not insignificant. The repetitive motions and constant turning, stretching, bending over, and reaching can be hard on anyone’s body, much less the older workers
Now, Come on OB. Strenuous manual labor is not a 21st century phenomenon. Your adversity to such is not how America took over the world economically in the past two centuries.

Maybe so but I've done it since I was a teenager and at almost 65 years old I'm damn sure not doing it now.
