Slide topper question
Both my slide toppers don't have the aluminum fabric protectors like my main and window awnings do. Is there any reason why they can't install them? My main slide topper has a damaged area where it is exposed to the sun. I put some 303 on it as soon as I got the MH, but would like to add the protector.

I have the covers on the toppers and it looks great but I will tell you one very big downside to them. They trap debris in them when the topper rolls back in and that debris can do some damage to your topper. I have to get up there and sweep off the toppers every time I have been close to trees, expecially those with acorns on them and little branches. My first coach did not have the can on them and the stuff rolled right off. It took 5 years for the sun to affect them . I don't know which way I would choose if I had a choice now. It is truly a pain to have to climb up on the roof to sweep stuff off before we can leave.

I would only have the slides out at the dunes and home. I can see what you mean. The slides don't have the angle that an awning does. Will check what my buddies have. The guys I camp with have anything from vintage to brand new DPs.

I only have the al. on the main awning not on the slides. and both slides seem to be starting to get tares but got to be very reasonable to change out when needed.
PS what offroad places do you go to. ???

My plan was to cut off the worn area and replace it with the aluminum cover.
I go to the Imperial dunes(Buttercup) west of Yuma.

Most slide toppers have plenty of extra fabric on the roller. You can probably trim off the worn area and just pull the fabric off the roller further. Check and see if you have enough "spare" fabric on the roller. You would need to get the fabric off the roller anyway, to sew a new bead into the end. The bead slides into the slot of either the metal cover or the roof rail itself if no cover.

Thx Gary. I'll check that when I can. It's not real bad now, so I'll probably wait till I "need" to.
BTW, I have 5 sewing machines and I know the 1913 White Rotary would be up to sewing the fabric.
