Small question, looking for right answer!

I'm hooking up a dish network receiver to a HDTV. My question is which is better, hookup using the standard coaxial cable ( coax comes into sat. box and out to HDTV coax hookup) or (coax comes into sat. box and out to (AV IN hookup) - RCA plugs for sound and S-Video for video) I've heard S-video is better than coaxial, not sure.
P.S. Dish receiver DOES NOT have HDMI out, ONLY coaxial or RCA & S-Video output.

If its a dish network receiver and an HDTV they should both have HDMI.if they do that is by far the best for both video and audio! Good luck!

For HD you need HDMI or Component cables.

S-video is better than coax for SD.

I would say go with the s-video and RCAs then, unless there is optical audio on the two units. you'll definately get better picture an d sound with that setup!

Without a doubt S-video...if you it!

Had the same problem, but unfortunately my HDTV didn't have an S video input, only composite (RCA) and RF (coax). S video will give you the best picture quality on an HD receiver from an SD (standard definition) sat unit. Only drawback is that you have to run separate left and right audio cables. You can buy a separate converter for around $50 that takes in S video and audio and converts them to HDMI, but all it will do is simplify the cabling.

Sounds like a non HD receiver being hooked to a HDTV thus the lack of HDMI.

On paper specs the S-Video should perform better than the standard ole RCA composite or regular RF (Coax) signals. However, I have a DirecTV Standard definition (D12) receiver hooked to my 2 HDTVs in the motorhome and I tried all 3 signals to try to see which one looked better. I tuned to the DirecTV Menu/Setup options so I'd be able to use the same on-screen picture to do comparisons. I tried all 3 methods, Composite (RCA), S-video and Coax/RF. On my TV's I couldnt tell a difference between any of the different connection methods so I just used Coax since my motorhome is already wired between the 2 TV's for it that way I didn't have to run any other cables. Now if I could have noticed some huge difference in the picture quality then I might have considered the effort to run an S-video to both TVs. If/when I upgrade this receiver to an HD type then I'll use all HDMI or Component - then it will be worth running new cables between the TV's.

I say try each one on your TV and see if you can see a huge difference or not.

Just my $.02 cents

Its for sure not a HD receiver if it doesn't have the HDMI connection.

You got the house cleaned?

Do it the way that your owners manual says! If you do not have a manual, download one.

Yep it sounds like it's a new TV being connected to a SD receiver. It'll work ok but it won't be HD.

On non HD DishNet receivers if you use the standard coaxial hook-up you will not have stero sound, thus the S-Video with the RCA sound cables are your best bet.

Doesn't the receiver have component video outputs? The RGB (Red, Green, Blue) RCA plugs? That, coupled with audio jacks, is your best signal.

For SD Tv, though, it isn't going to make much, if any, difference. The coax or composite video (yellow RCA jack) can handle SD adequately and that's all you have anyway.
