Probably because the CA legislature like the WA legislature ignores the will of the people all the time. Last time I checked I'm not paying $30 for my car tabs like the referendum we all voted for.

This has at least two objectives, raise money for government, and force more citizens to public transportation.

A lot higher, as a percentage or the total dollar? California is around 1.10-1.20 percent of the sales price, but keep in mind that the median-cost home is higher than the national average, so we pay more in property taxes and special assessments.

As a fourth generation Californian, I have seen my share of changes to the golden (now tarnished) state. I was born and raised in Southern CA. Dad was a motor officer for LAPD, Grandparents lived within 30 minutes, and Disneyland was in our back yard, times were good

I currently live in Truckee, 12 miles north of Lake Tahoe. I have been here for 30 years. Summers can't be beat, but Winters are now quite boring. Cold days and lots of snow for six months is not fun. I moved here to take a local govt job, and ski. I have a beautiful home, but long to be near my daughter in FL. She works for Disney World.

I have been eligible to retire for the past two years. I max out in three. But now with all of the State's woes, including the new doubling of the DMV fees, and me helping to subsidize the octuplet mother and others like here I am truly considering putting the house on the market (for a loss) and start my fulltiming. I have seen CA and the rest of the Western states from every angle. I think it is time to leave this place to the illegals and the politicians to wallow in their own taxed misery

I feel for you guys. I just found out the Governor of Colorado is ready to sign a new bill for the exact same thing. It didn't take them 15 minutes to come up with this bill and get it approved it the legislation, and less time then that to get the governor to sign it. There not exactly doubling it however. It will vary between $35 to $70 additional bucks depending on the weight of the vehicle. In many cases it will more then double. We have a '96 Chrysler and for the last 6 years has cost us the minimum of $29. However, it looks like ours will go up to $59. I'm not sure how it will work on the motorhome yet.

Brakeless, I would suspect that in your post that you were generalizing the term "You". As I don't recall you standing next to me in the polling booth when I did or did not cast my vote for a specific candidate. If your response intended to irritate, than you have accomplished that much. I would like to post more but Rush is on and I have to tune in

I just read the other day the CA's cut of the estimated income from the oil leases offshore was $60 billion. That would pay for a lot of liciense fees and help out on our balance of payments.

Greg, be sure to check your medical benefits. We have friends who receive their retirement benefits through the state, if the leave the state, they lose their medical benefits.

I'm afraid it's just anothe "Gotya" from the state.

I believe our property taxes in Californi are lower than a lot of states such as Wisconsin and they are protected by Prop. 13.

You have to remember we did not have a budget for 100 days because the two parties refused to work together or to compromise. Republican votes were needed and they refused till two or three on the last day agreed. The majority is Democratic which means the majority of the voters voted Democratic, so the blame goes to the public of both parties for voting in such idiots.

There might be a proposition to have both houses be independent of party affiliation. Do away with the political parties and have them run on their merits.

One reason I bought an older MH is for the lower DMV fees.

My 2 cents...
