Staying Close To Home

Because of the price of diesel, we will be staying relatively close to home. I found out that in Oregon, as a disabled Vet, I can camp for 10 days in any Oregon state park for a total of $8. We will be checking a lot of them out.

I'm staying close to home, but not due to fuel prices. Now that I'm part of the "over the hill" bunch, I can get 50% off my state park campsite fees. I can put that savings towards fuel expenses. Win-win!

We are staying close to home. No more summer trips from Wisconsin to the Red Woods of Northern Ca. and other interesting places.

However, it is not fuel price that is keeping us here. The issue is all weekend reserve able camp sites are reserved within hours of reservation being opened.

We can't reserve that far in advance because old people like us require frequent medical care. Medical professionals have give no consideration to prior plans.

When a block of time becomes available, every weekend and often every site in every campground near interesting places are booked.

The pandemic shut everything down. Things reemerged in an entirely different environment.

Going to Southwest Texas last winter meant moving every day or two to find an unreserved site. Only boon docking sites and a new RV park just opening up had openings for more than one or two days. The new RV park was booked solid within a couple of weeks.

Even in Wisconsin winters, state park electric sites are frequently booked solid.

OP: If you haven't already, be sure to look into the free Disabled Vet Access card for free entry to national parks, historic sites, etc.

If you qualify for age then there's an disabled access card that will also give you 1/2 off on camping.

People should look their states dept. of tourism for things to de closer to home. I'm 79 and had no clue Indiana has so much happening daily throughout the year until I got a copy of the tourism magazine last spring.
