Surge Protector
Hello,
Has anyone out there installed a surge protector on their RV? Do you recommend the portable unit or a permanent mount? How difficult is the permanent one to install?

I recommend the hardwired EMS/Surge protector by Progressive Industries. With or without the remote display is up to you. They are not too hard to install, as long as you have the room, can get a two or three foot section of #6 4 wire stranded cable and you have a good volt meter.

I'll second the Progressive, hardwired model.
I just installed mine, and love it.
Just be sure there's room to mount it.
The advice about getting a yard or so of additional wire (above) is worth taking.

I prefer the portable model as you can take it with you to a new rig. Had one go out on me which prevented me from getting power. Removed it and had power until I could replace the unit.
Of course if you are "handy" these may not be issues to you.

I agree with the above. It took me less than an hour to install mine. I put it on the back wall of the compartment. I didn't get the display as I can see mine easily from the outside.

The hard wired ones have a bypass switch so you can operate in case they malfunction, which is rare as I understand. I put one in the connection bay on my former Suites, but it went with the trailer when I traded. It saved me once right after I installed it, and that after many, many years of camping without one.

It's more important that you have a EMS surge protector, rather than if it is permanent or portable. Mine is a portable and it's no hassle. I didn't have room for a permanent mount.

Was in a campground when lightning struck the ground a few of the RV's fryed a lot of equipment one of theme had a portable surge protector and it literally exploded but not a thing in his RV had damage.
I have used a portable one ever since as I don't want that exploding in my unit.

I installed the progressive permanent mount. If your handy with tools and understand electricity it is easy to install.

+1. Surge protector explosions must be rare since you do not hear of many, but it can and does on rare occasion happen. I also prefer to be able to see the display anytime i want. Security of the portable is however an issue. Sometimes if not secured, they walk off.
As stated above, having a surge protector is the important thing. Hard wired or portable is. Personal preference.

We've used a portable dog bone type surge protector for the past couple of years, but we are going to install a hard wired Progressive Industries unit with remote display within the next few weeks for far more complete protection.

Progressive Industries hardwired unit was the first "mod" I made to our new-to-us coach.

Where does one mount a wired ems progressive in a 5th wheel. I bought it for my class A but sold it. Now own a 2009 Cardinal. The 50 amp cord plugs into side of RV no clear place to mount ems?
Where have others located it?

People say this all the time, yet I haven't met anyone who ever actually lost one. There was a thread somewhere on this, and while many had heard the rumors, not one responder could point to an actual incident. While possible, I think that such theft is a lot rarer than the chatter about it would indicate.
In any event, I have the Progressive Industries EMS-PT30C Portable EMS RV Surge Protector. At $208 the price was right, and it will serve me just fine. I don't really plan to spend much time watching the readout anyway.
