Where does one draw the line? A couple of years ago, we bit the bullet at $2.00 per gallon. So now it's at $3.00.

How big an impact is in the scheme of things and what does one do? Sell? Who's going to buy it? What if one is "upside down"?

Do we park it and hope the price of fuel will come down some day? Do we take shorter trips or stay longer at each place?

Probably each of us will make some necessasry adjustments and "truck on down the road"! See you there!

If one is upside down on an RV loan and they default they will contribute to the current economic mess the same as those that have defaulted on upside down home mortgages.

IMHO, lenders issuing RV loans should never loan more than the RV is worth or will be worth as the loan amount is repaid.

We just made a trip down south and even with the price of fuel it is still the best way to travel given all the other expences you would have without the convenience of a rig. We all have friends that think nothing of spending 5K on a trip every few years. I think we see more than they with fewer dollars. For longer trips (timewise) the fuel price will have to go up a lot more to discourage us.

Getting ready to leave central Florida for the east coast, then north to home, I checked the Flying J web site. What a shock to see how much diesel has gone up since we left in December. Guess our "extra" stops won't take place and we will ride a couple hours longer between campgrounds.
We joked about diesel hitting $4.00. Not laughing now.

Diesel seems to have jumped up about .10 to .12 in the past week.

I like to do "back of the envelope" calculations.

Suppose you travel 8000 miles a year, and your fuel consumption average 8 mpg ... so you burn 1000 gallons of fuel this year. So your fuel cost for diesel about $3,500 (gasoline about $3,000).

Insurance $750 annually

License $250 annually

Storage / campgrounds $1000 annually

Depreciation $12,000 annually

Your total cost for fuel, insurance, license storage and depreciation is $17,500 so the fuel cost is about 20% of the total cost ...

But as the MasterCard commercial says ==> The RV Lifestyle is PRICELESS

If you want to travel "cheaply" get little KIA, a suitcase with rollers on it, stay in motel 6, and eat balogna sandwiches

Depreciation $0 annually (34 years has pretty much used up all the depreciation)

Or, get a pickup camper and move to Oregon

Joseph, I like your post!

Consumer inflation mostly hurts if you buy new stuff all the time!

Our depreciation is about $5K per year. We spend more on campgrounds because we stay at pricier "resort" types because of the kids.

We decided to downsize the house so we can spend more time camping.

It's all about priorities
