Tire age affects cars too

Interesting short article about the tires on Paul Walker's Porsche Carrera GT.

It would seem that anyone driving 93MPH on city streets needs no explanation of what happened beyond "stupid".

Typically, cars will wear out the tread before the age is a factor.

I have a 69 Camaro that's been going through resto for about 10yrs. I have the tires that were on the car when I got it, no idea how long they were on there before that, BUT...

No way I'll drive the car with those tires.

Funny thing is, when I mentioned tires "aging out" to some muscle car friends, they had never heard of it.

Many people seem to have no idea that tires become dangerous when they get old. I've seen any number of people driving on under-inflated tires, bald tires, even tires that threw sparks from the exposed belts(!) Considering that, given the cost of tires these days and the tendency of people to ignore problems that are inconvenient or costly, I suppose it should come as no shock, but still, I don't want to be driving the other way on a narrow road when they have a blowout while texting and speeding...

I have 4 tires for the DW's car that I need to take a look at they're the 4 snows that I have mounted on steel rims for winter use. I know the tires are at least 5 years of use on them and not sure of the mfrg date. These tires are still at about 75% tread life left, so it is possible to age out car tires. I need to check her summer tires also for mfrg date for the same reasons.

Do car tires have a DOT date stamp in them? Same code as RV tires? I have some on a 95 Astrovan that might be 10-12 years old. We only use that van when the other one is in the shop or we need two at the same time...maybe 700-1000 miles a year....all local travel.

From my understanding 'all' tires have a DOT date code on them. It is true that most 'normal' vehicle drivers are not aware that their tire could age out. However most of these vehicles get driven more then our MH's ever will, hence they replace tire more often.

Yes they have the same type of date code.

This reminded me so I went out in the back yard and check the tires that came off my pickup last year. 50% tread 9 years old (code 3405).
then I looked the mud tires I only run on vacations on my jeep. They were made in 07. These mud tires are never run over 30 PSI or 50 MPH and have No visible cracks as they are stored out of sunlight 9 months of the year. They are going back on in June. I trust them.

I was tire shopping last year when i saw a friend show up to get the tires replaces on his 84 Z28. Hes said he needed new tires,.... I saw his tires and remembered they were same cheap brand I had bought for my 83 Z28 back in the 80's. yes his were from the 80's as well. I looked at him after looking at his tires.
His quote "Its time for new rubber"
