Mnflyboy's question was why are they not in the middle always, I have often wonder the same thing. Sometimes close to one side then few a miles down the road close to the other side?????????

Might have something to do with the angle of attack. Closer to the road, less angle of impact and less likely the vehicle will penetrate the barrier and enter the opposing lane.

Just a guess.
