Tire pressure extenders

Hey guys,

Took the rig down to Les Schwab to put on Inside dual tire pressure extenders and this is what they did. Easy to reach but is it safe just coming through the outside dual or should it have a bracket of some sort that I have seen on semi's? thanks in advance. gk

There are large rubber grommets made to fit the hole. Some are made with no hole or hole near wheel center or near rim. I never will use valve stem extensions. I had 10 inch one piece valve stems installed on the inside duals. I have seen too many extensions fail causing deflation or tire damage.

I agree Ross.

Normally, there is a stabilizer installed to keep the extension from moving around. Find out who makes the steel/aluminum wheels and check to see what they recommend.

I have been using valve extenders for 22 years now, and I have never had a problem with them.

I quit using the valve stem extenders because they eventually leak and you have no way of knowing on your inside dually without checking pressure. I use metal valve stems with TPMS and check tire pressures with it or remove the TPMS and check each tire individually. I have not had issues with tire pressure since removing the extenders. We quit using them at the fire dept years ago.

I haven't had an issue while using valve extenders in the past 22 years. I have had snow and ice packed all around the valves and between the tires and still no problems. Buy good quality extenders, and install them correctly. Do not over tighten them (you will damage the small rubber seal) and do stabilize them.

The nut and the length of the thread end strongly suggests it is designed to have an outer mounting bracket that they didn't install. Probably no good place to fasten it, but they should have used a different extension or asked your permission to rivet a bracket to the wheel liner. If a flex extension more than a few inches long is used, it really needs to be fastened securely. Solid metal extensions on metal valves can be longer - most large trucks use them.
