Tires slashed while at campground

We recently had vandals hit our camp in addition to a few others. They struck between 2am and 6am while we were sleeping. Even got the car of some tent campers nearby.
Anyone ever have their tires slashed while camping? I guess I have seen it all now.

What type of campground were you in, public or private?

Private campground on a lake. There was a concert event going on. Story that I was told was that local boaters were hanging out on beach and were asked to pay or leave. Apparently, they took it out on the campers later that night.
I'm just glad that I wasn't in my class A coach.

Would think that air escaping from tires that are suddenly slashed would make awakening noises. Ice picking is another way to be silent. Happened to me.

I've been in a few places where I was concerned about the people in or near the campground, whether other campers or just nearby. Sometimes people or events beyond the control of campground management, sometimes preventable. Either way, sufficient reason to not risk going back to those places, I think.

Long ago I worked a couple summers in a small private campground not too far from a large state park that was within a three hour drive of a major city. The SP campground got overwhelmed with party-goes every weekend and we had to be cautious about the overflow. We got a lot of pleasant & quiet folks who were fleeing the party scene, but mixed in were always a few who thought they could party at our place too. My boss ran a tight ship and had no compunctions at all about throwing misbehaving campers out late at night.

Back then, the state park rangers shared their list of banned campers with us and the miscreants were always shocked when we turned them away. Years later, so-called privacy concerns stopped the sharing and and it got more & more difficult to refuse service to anyone. The owners got tired of the hassle and sold out.

Not yet but at an ungated private campground in Bradenton, FL this winter several vehicles were entered overnight and stuff stolen: money, a weapon, and a work laptop. No damage other than to emotions, and maybe that one person's job...

The Sheriff's office said other campgrounds and neighborhoods were hit the same night. Somehow they knew the perps were from the St. Pete area.

We were way in the back at the far end from the entrance road so they may have walked in from an adjoining business.

Yes, all robbed vehicles were unlocked. My car's alarm bleeped three times when I unlocked it the next day indicating someone tried to open a door. I wish there was a way to make the alarm go off when someone tries to open a locked door.

.... and folks are concerned about being in the boonies! Staying close to cities is a greater opportunity for theft, etc. It's too much trouble for troublemakers to roam the backcountry.

Thieves steal stuff they can get easily and sell easily. They don’t spend lots of time and money driving an hour out of town to a solitary camper in the hope the camper isn’t there and they have something to steal. Instead they pick busy places where they aren’t as noticeable near population centers where they can fence the stuff. This is why bikes, cat converters, and electronics walk off in urban areas or in campgrounds next to busy lakes.
