Toilet Leak, Carpet in Bathroom and OMG the STINK!
Okay, so from the headline, you can probably figure I've had a rather challenging day
There was a leak from the toilet and it soaked the carpeting in the bathroom. Leak is now all fixed up, after a day of "seek and repair"..but, how on EARTH do I sanitize the carpeting? Who puts CARPETING in a bathroom in the first place? Should I just have my dear Dude cut the carpeting OUT and replace it with a hard surface? What to do? Help, it reeks in here!

Remove the carpet and get a large fan running in there asap. Use vinegar to clean up the area.

Not sure what kind of coach you have but you probably have a subfloor down there and you can remove the carpet and put down a nice vinyl flooring, maybe even extend it beyond the bathroom for a new clean look.

There isn't anything you can use to totally remove all the bacteria that is now in the carpet. This is a category 3 contamination and the carpet should technically just be removed along with any padding. Get fan(s) on the sub floor asap and get it good and dry. If you are in a colder climate, some heat will help. Be sure it is good and dry. If you can get of a moisture meter it would be best to be sure it is thouroughly dry. Then I would seal the sub floor with a poly or something similar before installing anything new.

We did pull the carpeting and padding completely out of the bathroom. I then bleached the floor, and placed a fan in there and will seal and install the new vinyl when we're sure it's completely dried out. We're in the desert, so should dry fairly quickly. Thanks for the advice, I was sure that carpet had to GO. If you have carpeting in the bathroom, you may want to do a preemptive strike and remove it, sure would save you the problem we've had!
