Trading and buying used
We are talking to a dealer about a used Dp and we are trading a newer used DP for it. They have given us a number for ours plus cash but have bare info on ours and do not know how there's is equiped even through they sold it new. Want us to give deposit to hold the deal. Trade is suppoused be in next week and they will send us pictures then. We have looked at another one but not quite as good a deal. Are we getting strung along. This a major dealer.

Without physically putting my feet in the other unit and checking it out closely there is no way I would put a deposit down.

So, the dealer wants you to put down a deposit on a used DP that they don't have yet, AND you have never seen???

Pictures do not reflect a true view. You have got to be there with your eyeballs. Do yourself a favor and don't turn loose of money until you are satisfied with the deal.

If it's a major dealer with potentially a lot of units moving I can see him wanting a deposit to hold it for you to inspect. I have done this twice but both times I got it in writing from the sales manager that the deposit was fully refundable it if I walked on the deal, then you have nothing to worry about. One deal I refused and the dealer credited my CC the next day.

The request for a deposit is not unusual, but I would not do it unless the deposit is fully refundable, at my discretion. No way would I make a non-refundable deposit on a rig I hadn't actually seen yet. Not just pictures either.

Sounds like this dealer already has a buyer for your Excursion and is trying to lock you in. I had this happen on a car purchase - our trade-in was detailed and gone in 2 days. Unfortunately, the car dealer had a problem getting us a title for the new car and we couldn't back out. We drove around on his dealer plate for a month.

Don't do it until you can walk in it, sit down and 'feel' the coach. I suggest you turn the heat on and 'smell' the coach for a few minutes.
Got excited about one when we first got involved with RVing. Then drove up to see it on a warm sunny day and the odor of dogs and dirt hit us. Cold days can hide things

If you want the dealer to hold that incoming rig for you until you can inspect it personally, you are going to have to make a deposit. That's just normal business practice. If you are willing to take the chance that somebody else buys it before you get to see it, don't make the deposit. If the deposit is refundable after your inspection, there is no risk to you. If not, you have to decide if you are willing to risk losing the deposit.
The dealers I am familiar with treat pre-inspection deposits fully refundable. They don't become non-refundable until a sales contract is written. Make sure you know which it is before making any deposit.
