As a career mechanic I've seen some crazy/oddball stuff before.
I have to say this tops it.

What a law suit this will be.
Members of the Jury there was no warning on the bucket not to use as a Gasoline can.
Some people are just dumb.

I am truly amazed. Just when you reach an age when you think you have heard it all.
Someone comes along and actually trumps dumb.

After thinking about this one, I actually saw this done, in my driveway. It was an uphill grade and they had just delivered some lumber I had ordered. The truck was very low on gas and woudn't get gas to the carb so they drained some gas into a coke bottle, took off the air cleaner and proceeded to pour the gas down the carb until they drove the truck to flat ground. I was really amazed that it didn't end like it did for the other morons.

According to a more detailed report on TV news, they actually had a 2-gallon bucket of gas (no lid on it) inside the van (which was stationary) and were pouring gas into the carburator using a Coke bottle (presumably with the doghouse removed) to try and get it running. The investigators think it backfired and ignited the fumes from the bucket, followed by most of the 2 gallons going up.
I'm amazed that someone at the gas station didn't stop them, unless it was a self-serve with a minimum-wage cashier who doesn't know about fire risk. I'm also amazed that all three of them survived the inital fire. There hasn't been any follow-up on the local news regarding their condition.
The van looked like a late 80's Dodge conversion van.

Yes the Doghouse was removed. The article said the cover between the driver and passenger was removed.

I've not seen a gas pump that didn't have some kind of warning plastered all over it proclaiming the need for a "proper" container for despensing fuel. Seems no matter how valiant the effort to protect those society deems 'cannot protect themselves', they somehow overcome those efforts. Ron White said it best: "Ya can't fix stupid"!
The cost of this 'protection' must be astronomical and it sure does clutter the products we all buy with the horde of warning labels ya can't remove. I once bought a sun shield for one of the cars that when unrolled, the inside surface read in very BIG letters: "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE WITH VISOR INSTALLED"! After a few days I tossed it...maybe there IS something to be said about letting 'natural selection' take it's own course. Bob
