Travel Insurance

My wife and I are looking for affordable travel insurance as we are renting a condo in Nevada for 3 months. Most appear they are for those who choose to fly to their destination. We will be driving to Nevada.

Can anyone recommend a company that caters to snowbirds that drive. Thanks in advance.

We use an Allianz travel plan for snowbirding. They came out with those plans during the pandemic. My wife's Unaffordable Care Act plan doesn't work outside of our area because Ohio has no ACA PPO plans.

It was about $750 total for four months last winter. And she still got to pay the $1,200 monthly premium that we could not use while we were gone.

Look at joining FMCA, Their included travel insurance is pretty good coverage and it's just part of the membership. No extra cost. I've never used it but have gotten good reports from some who have.

There are several. Best to use a google search and call several. Our Canadian snowbird red friends say they research different companies each year because the rates and coverages change. They have said it is getting much more expensive year over year due to both increased costs of the healthcare provided and the fact the policies are priced by age and medical history. Also many of them also pay cash for medical procedures since the wait times for many are years, plural, in their home provinces.

Are yiu looking for medical coverage while you’re away, or just trip cancellation/interruption insurance to cover the rent you would owe if your plans change or your trip gets interrupted?

I’m looking for something similar. I don’t need medical coverage, but I do need trip cancellation/interruption insurance to cover the 3 months of condo rent should my plans change due to a covered reason.

I called all the major players. The problem I encountered was that they would only cover payments that you had made, not payments you might owe.

In my case, I’m paying rent monthly for three months, payable monthly starting January 1. If an unavoidable and unexpected event occurs, such as serious illness, and I need to cancel my trip, I will still be charged for the three month’s rent. Every insurance company told me they would not cover those future payments.

Not sure what the OP is looking for, or why, but I would sure love to know my future vacation rental payments would be covered if the trip doesn’t go as planned.

Eager to follow along on this thread.

We are driving to Nevada so no cancelation coverage is needed. We are both under 65 with no medical issues, this is just for medical emergency purposes. We are just ticking off the items one at a time.

Thanks.

Ah! In that case there are lots of options. When I travel and need that sort of coverage, I've always used insuremytrip.com

They will present you with many different quotes from many different providers which you can easily compare. You can also see the ratings of the plans they offer. They don't send a lot of spam afterwards, which is always nice to know.

I had to use my plan one year while traveling, and it was handled effortlessly.

BTW - most of the medical plans are "comprehensive", meaning they include both medical and trip cancellation. A nice feature to know that your nonrefundable trip expenses will be covered should your trip get cancelled or interrupted unexpectedly.
