Question Travel log iPad/iPhone app

I am looking for an app to keep track of my trips where I can add my points of interest visited, campgrounds. I'd like to make notes and add pics. I don't need to share it. It's be nice if it were more RV centric.

What apps do you use?

You might want to check out "Day One", a travel journal by Bloom Built, LLC. Available for the iPad, iPhone and Mac OS.

Though it is not RV specific, it is designed to work as a travel journal and provides an abundance of travel related features including photos, multi device sync, location tags, calendar, reminder and much much more. It's not free but quite inexpensive.

Is it searchable? I find that many times I need to "remember" a specific campground but I can barely remember what state it is in, much less what the name of the campground was.

I know. Eat more brain food. I don't even remember what IS brain food. Carrots maybe? No. That's for your eyes. Darn!

Just found an app called RV companion. It doesn't have the journal piece that I'm looking for but it does have more RV specific things.
I think that I will try the free world version as well as Day One to journal.

I find trying to use apps that will require any significant data entry on a iPhone or iPad is just too slow and frustrating. Anything that I'm going to put much data into lives on my laptop.

That said - I keep my Travel Log in an Excel spreadsheet. I'm still in the process of refining what data I want to record ... so Excel's ability to add/delete/modify columns and content is helpful.

Pictures and "journal" entries are an adjunct to my Travel Log. I organize my pictures in subfolders - by trip (i.e., all the pictures taken during a given trip - in a subfolder titled by date and destination, i.e., 20150417 - Algonac State Park). I also try to draft a journal entry about each trip ... typically done in a Word document. These all go into a folder as well. I add a hyperlink in the spreadsheet to each trip's picture folder as well as each trip's journal entry.

One of these days when I'm done working my day gig and am looking for a rainy day hobby while traveling, I'm thinking I'll take it all and put it out on a website so that I can share it with friends and family.

We use a calendar on the computer to record stops and stays. DW puts a smiley for good ones, a straight line for so, so, and a frownie for ones we don't want to go back to. She also uses "Notes" on the iPad for the written word, but the calendar has a notes feature also. it is totally searchable. The specific one we use is for the MAC, however I have used calendars for the android/PC that worked the same way.

Yes, the text in Day One is searchable and you can "tag" entries to enable isolating the content by subject. As an example, I can have a tag for our Alaska Travel Journal entries, another for just daily thoughts and comments and another for recording data such repairs, fuel etc. I can then look back at my entries and see only one of the tagged subjects.

You can insert images, geotag locations and even record the local weather. It can be very simple to use but it's got a good deal of muscle for those wanting a full set of features and capabilities.

I got a copy years ago when it was newly released but I used it only for a short time as it did not have some of the capabilities I wanted for recording trip journals. I have not found anything else that did what I wanted. Now, a few years later, I have found that Day One has grown substantially and now includes all the features I had asked for so I'll be using it on our 5 month trip through BC and the Yukon, up to Alaska and then down through Alberta.

I just had a look at RV Companion and it looks like an interesting app.

As you say, it is not a journal, but it may serve well in tracking other things. I have downloaded the free version to give it a try.

I too find my iPhone and iPad limiting and that is one of the reasons I like Day One. A Mac OS version is also available and you can sync them all together to enable entry in whichever is most convenient at any given time. You can do the majority of your entries on your Mac, quickly add a note about a scenic viewpoint on your iPad and take a snapshot of a great meal at a restaurant.

I tried using Excel at one point but found that by the time I have linked all my external data it was getting more complicated than I wanted to deal with and it lacked visual appeal.

After our upcoming trip north I will use Day One's PDF or iBook export to create a journel of our trip that can be shared with friends and family.

Never needs to download updates and the batteries last for ever. ;-)
