Traveling Coast Highway in a 40' pusher
I would like to know how bad is the Coastal Highway or the Redwoods?

I can tell you I drive it in a 31' class C and I've seen Large class A on that road. you can do the Big Sur section fine. north of S.F. it does get a little sketchy, but I see Large RV on it every time I drive it. also tour busses run all up and down the 1 (coast highway) not the best road to drive if you have vertigo... ...Redwoods is fine mainly a frontage road next to the 101, avenue of the Giants.

We drove the highway all the way from Washington state, down through Oregon, and onto California before dropping off to go to Napa Valley. This was in 2009.
Great drive, very scenic with plenty of pull offs that will accommodate your coach.
We also jumped off to go inland so we could tour the Monaco Factory
We did make a mistake and drove into a small parking area without a turn around, there was a sign at the entrance but only saw it after I started to turn, had to do a 12 point turn to get turned around. Just watch for signs and you'll be fine.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!
We want to make that drive one of these days! I've read that if you have a choice it would be better to drive it south to north. That way you're not hanging over the edge!
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

I wouldn't advise a 40' to drive Hwy 1 - Coast Hwy.
Hwy 101 from Washington to Oregon to California is just fine.
The Redwoods are accessed from Hwy 101.

Are you callinag “coastal highway” hwy 1 or 101? Big difference, 1 is 2 lanes, narrow, curvies, slow. But so can sections of 101 be slow, 2 lanes, especially thru the redwoods.
Large RV’s do it every day just be prepared for slow, especially when you meet a logging truck!

Meeting oncoming large vehicles on narrow roads came be "exciting" at times, but you get used to it if driving narrow roads. It's usually not a big thing.

Just drove it a few weeks ago....easy, but busy. I am going to be on it again in Oct, and it will be less busy with kids back in school, and the weather change.

Yeah, I always tell my wife I just close my eyes until it's over. So far so good!

Driven it many times. I don't see a problem at all. But since your asking maybe it's not for you? People drive it every day with rigs bigger then yours. Bottom line is if your not comfortable with whatever situation may arise don't do it!

The Hwy 1 stretch from Monterey to Morro Bay just reopened a few weeks ago after a long closure due to a massive landslide. Expect lots of traffic on a road filled with 15 mph turns - but beautiful scenery. Pullout spaces may be limited.
CA currently has lots of fires, there is a major fire around Redding and another one just outside of Yosemite (park is partially closed). Check the Cal Fire map before you go & expect some smoky days.

I wouldn't hesitate driving the US 101 or CA 1. Plenty of sharp curves but bigger rigs than yours does it every day. I've driven it with my 38' pulling the 1500 pickup. Take it easy on the 1 and enjoy the scenery. Or, stay on the 101 and take day trips to the 1, thats just as enjoyable. Enjoy your trip.
