Tree slices thru Trailer

Lucky lady and two dogs rescued unharmed when this huge tree cut in half her TT at the Nevada County Fairgrounds near Grass Valley, Calif recently. They were rescued after 20 minutes by nearby folks.

High winds and heavy rains just visited the area recently.

Amazing! That's a 5th wheel and the tree is probably around her kitchen area. She's a very lucky gal!

This happened a few years ago at Pismo Coast Village RV Park in Pismo California. The campground is located on the beach and the large pines don't root any deeper than two feet because of the saltwater water table. This was the second time it happened when a "windnato" wind condition developed.

We were there when that storm kicked up. In the one photo is a tan Monaco Camelot with a tree up against its door. That tree crushed a small trailer next to the Monaco coach. The Monaco belongs to our friends, and they couldn't exit the coach. They called me a 2am to get them out. I had to saw off a limb to get their door open.

The crushed in half TT belonged to a fireman. He had just gone to the bathroom and returned to bed when the tree cut his coach in half, at the bathroom.

Since this was the second time the trees had fallen, the park had a tree crew in there the following morning and cut down all the large redwood trees. It was a shame to see them go but they were just too dangerous.

Those fortunate people’s time just wasn’t up.

I have a friend who’s son got killed when a limb fell from a tree while walking under it.

Life is certainly full of mysteries.

I have a glass breaking tool in the front and rear of the MH. If a fire would start or there was a gas leak I would want to expedite getting out. Also I boondock and I might run out of food waiting for help.

First time I personally saw such destruction was in the late 1960's. A possible tornado crossed the COE campground where we were staying. Our regular CG. Dad made us go to the toilets and hoped some shelter from the wood building might help protect us. (This was before utilities or hookups were common in most campgrounds. No shower houses, no brick or concrete structures in a CG.)

Most of the fellow campers tried to shelter in their vehicles. One family were in a four-door sedan. This was almost all tent camping. A very few slide-in truck bed campers.

A 9-inch diameter pine fell on the car, right on top of the back of the front seat. Took a couple hours work with chain saws to get the two teenagers in the back seat free. Luckily the front seat folks where leaning forward, not back. But no injuries.

I've seen too many instances of trees falling on houses, cars, RVs, and other vehicles during my life. At least a dozen personally. Part of that is from being 72 years old. Live long enough and you see more weird stuff.

Also, I grew up in southwest Arkansas where tornados are not a very rare occurrence, in an area with many pine trees raised for the paper production industry. A tall pine snaps near the ground level and falls like a phone pole.

Hardwoods tend to not snap, but get pulled over, exposing an extensive below ground level root system.

I always look closely at the trees in a campground. A few times I've felt the site is unsafe and chosen to take another site, if possible. Twice I've walked away (pulled away) from over $150 pre-paid sites/ CG because I thought they were unsafe. Without any reimbursement.

One was in Eureka, CA, the other in Hattisburg, MS.

As a forester I am acutely aware of the dangers of falling limbs and falling trees. Before you commit to a camping spot look up and evaluate the risk of the trees on your site.

In windy conditions you have to be very careful. National Parks in particular have lots of older trees with all kinds of defects. Wet conditions with heavy snow and wind are the worst.
