Truck Stop Fueling
Can I fuel a pick up that holds 36 gallons of diesel at the big truck fueling pumps.
I would use around 28/30 gallon to fill the tank when stopping.
My concern is the high volume pumps. Only 28/30 gallon into a 36 gallon tank, will the pump blow fuel out the fill pipe before it gets shut off. Don't want a diesel bath just trying to get some fuel.
I usually use the Flying J RV island to fuel and they are regular pumps, not high volume, but would like to use other truck stops, like Loves, TA etc.
Advise? Thanks....

Yes you can. Also if you use the truck islands, you can get the TSD fuel card and get discounts. Check out the open roads app.

Depending on your truck, you may have to stand and hold the nozzle partially open to prevent burping/splash back...
Although I haven't heard complaints about this from owners of pickup built in the last 10 years or so.
My 1993 F350 will puke diesel right back at you if the truck stop nozzles are fully open.

This is interesting. Are the pickups able to regularly accept full insertion of a high-flow diesel fuel nozzle? My Winnebago View only accepts full insertion at Auto-diesel pumps, making it difficult to refuel at the truck islands.

I would suggest to purchase one of these (amazon). While it says it is for a Volkswagon, it should also work well for your Winnebago. ~CA

When towing, I always fill up in the truck lanes. I put the pump on the lowest setting and they have all (so far) shut down normally. It is nice to fill that 30 gallons so quickly.
Good luck.

My 2008 Dodge Mega Cab diesel vehicle can, I have been filling up in the truck lanes since new. This is one of the main reasons for a diesel pick-up truck when towing a big 5er. I believe most if not all Dodges/RAM trucks from the first gen version on could fill-up at the truck lanes.
Not sure on Ford or Chevy/GMC when and if they have changed to accept the high flow truck nozzle.
For the original poster! I do not used the auto-hold feature on the fuel nozzle as I have had this feature sometimes not work fast enough to shut-off. Even with the auto fuel nozzle at standard gas stations I have had burp back from the nozzle not shutting off fast enough.

One of my biggest regrets of not going with a diesel pickup is that I often find it hard to locate a pump I can fill my truck when towing the TT.
EDIT: Interestingly, I just checked, the diesel is rated for 2K pounds less towing capacity over my 5.3L V8. Also reduces the payload by 300 pounds.
I would be in a smaller trailer with those reductions in specs for a diesel. Guess I am better off with the gasser.

For that amount of fuel I would simply go to the regular islands and use that pump. Price may be the same or less in some cases.

I have a 35 gal tank
I rarely use truck stations....dirty/spilt fuel/higher pricing
Yes the Large Nozzle will fully insert into filler neck

we do it all the time while towing our 5th wheel and even with the truck detached. our ram allows the high flow nozzle to be fully inserted. also, i have seen some truck lanes with a sign over them that says 'low flow'. these lanes have the auto nozzle even though they are in the truck lanes. generally when doing this we are using the TSD diesel card.

Yes, you can use the truck pumps, but I doubt the truckers will give you a warm welcome if they have to wait for you to fuel up. Not that it will take that long, but they know you could be using the pumps out front!

Exactly!
I would fuel there towing a large trailer / 5th wheel, I wouldn't fuel there with just a PU truck!

I apologize for not making this clearer. I assumed on my original post when I said I use the Flying J RV island to fuel & that they have regular pumps, not high volume you would assume I was pulling an RV. I have a 43 foot 5th wheel that follows very close behind and can not use the regular pumps out front.
And I would never just fuel a pick up out back in the big truck fuel lanes or use the RV lanes with out the 5er in tow........
I was just trying to find out about the high volume pumps & if they would blow out fuel all over the place filling a 30 gallon tank in a pick up truck vs a 150 gallon saddle tank on a Petercar.........
I believe with the answers to the post, I can use then, only stay with it and don't set the pump on automatic shut off.
