Trying to find a Washer

First time poster here, sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I'm looking for a replacement washer for the 146-0646 fuel solenoid cut-off on the Onan Generators. It looks to be copper or bronze, my bet is copper. The old washer has a slight deformation and is leaking fuel. I can't find any type of size or measurement description for the washer anywhere and would rather not buy an entire cut-off solenoid just to replace a washer.

Much appreciation for any help provided.

Hi, and welcome!

Got a picture? Anything special about the washer other than it's copper? If so, then it's just a common sealing washer. You should be able to get one at the local NAPA or ACE for a few cents. Banjo fittings and brake joints use them.

Some people say they can revive a copper washer by giving it a shot of flame from a propane torch until it changes color. I've never had any luck with the method, but in a pinch it wouldn't hurt to try.

If it's special, then nevermind. We can't know without that picture.

This is the image from Amazon. Looks like about an M8, going on the assumption it's most likely metric.

That should be a standard copper sealing or sometimes called a "crush" washer. 8mm is ~5/16. The ID is more critical than the OD. As long as the ID is correct and the OD doesn't interfere with anything you should be OK.

Aluminum should work there, too.

Could also see if there is a Cummins parts store near you. You could probably get the correct one.

Just my .02cents

I would try heating it up with a propane torch until it is glowing dull red hot, let it air cool hanging on a wire (steel wire coat hanger works well) until it is cool enough to touch, then try to reinstall.

Try a local NAPA dealer or another parts dealer like Autozone. They will sell a package of various sizes that are used for oil drain plugs w/washers.

FWIW, heating and cooling the washer to soften it is called "annealing".

I think I would try a local auto parts or hardware store first, though. These is a standard hardware item, not an Onan-specific part.

Harbor Freight sells an assortment for about $7. They are not metric but one of then may fit. It shows the kit includes 5/16, 7.937mm

Crush washers are available from most well stocked auto parts stores. Also, they are a one time use product and should not be re-used. Their purpose it to squash a little when tightened to provide a leak proof seal. Once "crushed" they usually won't seal a second time.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Thanks for all the suggestions. Went to a local car parts store, no metric, but found a copper crush washer that fit for the low price of $.10. Can't beat that.

Now that problem is resolved, onto the next one. New post so they don't get confused.
