It’s not rare to have the dreads of society prey on anyone or any opportunity! Being from prior law enforcement and then in the security field, I could share many stories here, very bad ones also. I myself have had 4 cars broken into and property taken!
My RV has exterior, solar motion lights, motion cameras with 2 way mics, and security camera stickers on all 4 sides including the back of my toad. I’m armed, and trained, and so is my dog! I urge anyone seeking too arm themselves, please get the proper training and practice often.
It won’t stop anyone from doing their deed, however, it will harden your target, and make them possibly skip you for easier prey.
Unfortunately it’s the way of the world, in every part of town.

one can buy a cell phone charger at every mini mart and most any store i this country. heck there are even millions of places you can get your phone (any brand) charged up for free.
i have never had any kind of problem at any place i have camped in. but then i camp away from city's.

We have a policy, if we pull into an RV campground at 4 pm, if no one else shows up
we leave, I carry my car keys with a fob, if needed I would press the car alarm. I do not carry a real gun, but do have a marine signal pistol, looks real and works well, and legal in Canada

Unwelcome Intruders In The Night
In the nine years we've been rving, we've had two incidences where some sketchy, hairly, and dirty guy walked around our rv but never approached. These incidences happened in Nebraska and California at truck stops. It was around 9-10pm, a quick word to the truck stop staff, and the guy was gone. We've noticed in the last 3-4 years, there's been more vagrants and "homeless" (with better smart phones than us) at gas stops and so on. But, I've been followed into the ladies room, hit up for cash and followed back out to the vehicle by an obvious 30's something tweaker. We've also been harassed at the pumps for money (not asked nicely) and get attitude when we send them off...nicely.
No problems at rv CG but then, we don't use them that often.

Un welcomed intruders in the night
Just once heard someone drunkenly meandering around the coach. They knocked and said something. We ignored but had defense at the ready. We stayed quiet and they went away. This was at a Walmart parking lot. Only problem that we ever had with 6 yrs full timing.

Yes, we have had it happen in Laughlin, NV. Remember, a couple was murdered in South Padre Island a year or so ago. Unfortunately, druggies are in every class of people nice park or not. [Mod Edit]

Nope... never had a problem with unwanted visitors...
Seriously, we’ve never had any uncalled for or unwanted visitors ... even without the tank (or “personal protection”...).
In all the past camping/RV’ing forums (Foretravel, Airstream, etc), guns and “personal protection” was rarely raised... this is relatively new mongering.
[Mod Edit]
Money. Pay attention.

2 instances in 5 months? Pal, you are bad juju. In a thunderstorm everyone should give you a wide berth.

Never had anything remotely similar to your experience.

Had a young woman knock after dark while at Tortilla Flat, AZ. Her "boyfriend" had been beating her and took her phone. No matter, no cell service there anyway. DW stayed with the rig and I took the gal to an emergency landline where she called local LEO's. She stayed with us until the LEO's got there, about 45 minutes. We had protection equipment so no problem for us. Not everyone out there is nice.

Many many years ago I went tent camping in Fort Wilderness by myself. I was about 20. First time. Two yahoos tried to get in my tent after dark. Next day a man invited me to have dinner with his family in their RV. While eating, he was rubbing my thigh with his kids and wife on the other side of the table. A couple of days later I met a nice guy running the pony ride. We talked for hours. I was too trusting and got into his car. Can’t remember where we were going. He got handsy. I was shocked and terrified. At some point I got pissed and told him if he didn’t stop the car, i was going to kill us both by grabbing the wheel and wrecking. He didn’t believe me. He soon changed his mind and called me crazy. I have only told my boyfriend at the time after I got home from my “vacation .” I needed another couple of days at home before going back to work. If you’re a young single woman alone, you are prey. Very sad.

I haven't had that happen when in the RV, but it happened at a hotel back in the 80's. I was working in the Seattle area and staying at a motel. Someone started pounding on the door about 3:00AM. The lock wasn't too good so I took a knife from the kitchenette and put it in the door jam. Not real safe but eventually he went away. Spooky. The next day I was in he office and I told my manager that I had to protect myself with a knife. Needless to say, I changed to a better motel!
