Using a 50 amp surge protector with 30 & 15 amp

Does a 50 amp surge protector work properly if plugged into 30 amps or 15 amps or do I need 3 different units

If a 30 amp power pole surges up to 40 amps, will that hurt anything if my system is designed for 50 amps

If not then do I need to use a surge protector at all when on 15 or 30 amps due to my coach being able to handle 50 amps

Surge protection is not about amps...circuit breaker handles that chore
Surge protection is about that 'sudden' in-rush of voltage, voltage spikes, open neutrals, open ground etc

50a Surge protector ...
Plug 30A to 50A adapter into power source then into surge protector then into rig power cord
Plug 15A to 50A adapter (or 15A to 30A adapter then 30A to 50A adapter) into power source then into surge protector then into rig power cord

In any of the above scenarios rig is protected from voltage spikes/sudden in-rushes etc

In above scenarios the 'feeder' CB protects amperage draw

Do the errors , relate to a possible park power problem .

Have you used your adapter and the surge guard at another park without problems ?

What brand & model of surge guard are you using ?

What error codes were you getting? You may have had a real problem with the pedestal. They are not always wired correctly. Try again at the next CG and see if you get the same thing. Let us know.

Error is probably because it is one phase only on 30a

50A surge guard doesn't care

I have used mine on both power sources

50A 5th wheel
30A via adapter----NO issues
15A via adapters....No issues

Surge Guard checked:
L1 & L2 voltages, Open Neutral, Open Ground, Reverse Polarity, etc.

My surge protector is hardwired prior to the transfer switch. I have plugged into 30 & 15 amp without a problem. I have the progressive surge protector and it will warn of reversed polarity and low voltage no matter what amperage outlet you are plugged into. I detected both these problems plugged into a 30 amp and a 15 amp.

Phase not a factor--
A 30 amp to 50 amp adapter has an internal jumper to provide power to both sides (legs) of the 50 amp power cord. Full 50 amp power is two 120 volt legs with a common neutral. Will measure 240 volts across the hot legs.

Most RV's use two 120 circuits. (Some large RV's do have 240 volt service) Black lines here are 120 volt.

Sounds like a bad adapter.
Disconnect after the adapter.
Check out Hooligans wiring diagram and check for 120 between gray and both blacks

I understand that but I don't think the protector does.
That is the error seen.

I could see a coach that had stuff that required 240v ( washer dryer comes to mind ) that you may want a surge protector that only accepts 240V.
I have not seen such a thing in my less than 1 year with a 50A RV.

If that is the case you can only connect to 50A.

What is the make and model for surge protector ?
