“ Graham said various Canadian campground operators hoped to push for legislation that would force campers to spend their nights in campgrounds.”

FORCE campers to spend nights in campgrounds? Where do they think they are, the Soviet Union?

Nope, just Canada.

A good citizen will comply.

Nothing better then forcing folks to comply with unfunded mandates. Maybe the CG owners can throw in a free first night.

Nothing new here - this has been going on forever in all industries and business sectors. Every business owner is trying to protect what they see as "their" customers, and businesses push for regulations like this all the time in an effort to restrict what they see as unfair competition.

Likely many of the people in those Walmart parking lots wouldn't stay in their campgrounds regardless of the rules - they'll just drive on to the next town or free camping site.

I seriously doubt they mean that literally, as in require you to stay at a campground. What they mean is to remove other, more attractive, options for those wanting a low-cost/free place to park overnight.

For the campground operators, this is sort of a game of Whack-A-Mole as they will be forever chasing the ingenuity of RV owners to find cheap/free places to park.

Maybe it’s different north of the border, but in my experience, any Walmart I’ve ever stayed at (lots of them) is RV free by 9am. Three and four day stays are a rarity where I’ve stopped. - Ron

Who missed this "Archived" article was from 17 years ago, and was just 're-printed' yesterday?

Back to morning brew . . .

If they were to dig a bit deeper, I bet they could find an article to repost where towns were looking to pass laws banning "horseless carriages" to protect the local blacksmiths and farriers. I would imagine such laws would also apply to RVs. If an article written 17 years ago about banning overnight stays at Walmart was newsworthy, think of the uproar a 125 year old article about a motorized travel ban being considered would generate. The deeper you dig, the more dirt you find.

I've decided to wait for the problem to appear before I attempt to solve it. But, I know it'll be rough on us cheapskates.

I've "been hearing" about this debate of overnight parking at WM and other places that offer free overnight parking.
It seems even some cities are caving to the local RV parks and passing legislation or city ordinances restricting overnight parking within the city limits.
It appears this is more prevalent in Canada but it's happening across the lower 48 as well.

If you want to use a WM for overnight parking, I've heard that it's best to call ahead.
Some places may have an ordinance against it plus I've heard that some WM's aren't RV friendly any longer.
