Water pump won't shut up!

Sometimes but not always, when I turn on a faucet the water pump vibrates as usual, and after I turn the water off, it still vibrates very loudly for another 30 seconds or so and sometimes will not shut down at all until I turn the pump off. I have looked all over for a leak but found nothing. I replaced it with a new pump but that did not help at all. Anyone else have this happen and found the problem?

The pump runs when the pressure is low. If you turn off the heaters in the water heater and the pump does not burp for 24 hours or more, smile.

It could be air someplace in the lines. Outside shower comes to mind first.

If it burps then I would start looking at the water heater pressure relief valve. If bad the water coming out of it vaporizes when it is hot so you do not see the leak.

I had a similar problem and found the valve which directs water to the system or to the tank to be ajar so it was pumping the water back into the tank.

I had a low point drain that caused it too.

New pump didn't solve it so it is NOT pump related (pressure switch, check valve, etc)

Pump run for 30 seconds AFTER a faucet is closed is an EXTREMELY long time to take to build up even system pressure to statisfy pump pressure switch

WHen it does this...have you opened a facuet and see if pump is actually pumping water or it sputters

Leak on discharge side which LEAK all the time.not just occassionally

Air leak on suction side of pump could cause intermittent pump pressure issues.
Could be 'winterizing' valve, loose hose clamp, pump strainer leaking etc

Doesn't take much to cause what you describe. We have a toilet fill valve that stuck slightly open sometimes and caused pump to run on. It took a while to find it since the leak-by was so minimal. Tap on toilet flush handle made pump cut off
