Well... it's now official!!!! WE'RE ON VACATION TO PARTS UNKNOWN!!!!!

Well... previously unknown to us (Bear and me). We wound up in Show Low, AZ tucked within the White Mountains.

Tired from a long journey/drive from Temecula, CA, we decided to just kick back and cool it for the rest of the day. But with the temperatures and the August VERY busy vacationing in high-drive, best to call ahead or plan on boondocking in VERY remote areas.

While we have some minor (hopefully) electrical issues needing immediate attention (detailed in a separate post under "appliances"), once that's out of the way, exploration time will begin in ernest.

With us now being at about 6,300 ft up, hiking will be at a minimum. But visiting the local lake and maybe renting a kayak (left without ours) may be in the offing.

If any of you have visited this area - Show Low, Pintop and Lakeside - and have suggestions of fun and interesting things to do, we're all ears!!!! But since I'm with dog and we're NOT into family adventures with kids, think more "adult LIGHT adventurer" types of activities where I can take Bear with.

We'll be here probably through the weekend. I do know that there's a "Posse's BBQ" - sort of a rodeo/foodie type thing to support the local police. I'll be there!!!

From here... not sure where we'll travel. Maybe into CO or...

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds good. We were in Show-Lo a couple of years ago and loved the area. Do head to Colorado and plan on spending some time there.

What park did you settle in?

Pay a visit to the Chamber of Commerce/Visitor's Center is the first thing we do when going to a new place. That... and Google. Lots of sites to explore. Here are two:

Well... this part of our vacation has proven to be... eventful!!!! Our residential refrig craped out on us!!! It stopped cooling and freezing food!! It DIED!!

I will admit that I knew it was on its way out several months ago, but, you just never know when it will breath its last... Go figure that it would while on a vacation!!!!

So, while we have taken MANY vacations without a refrig - tenting, motorcycling with a simple pull behind with sleeping quarters, etc. - guess we got really spoiled with our Class A and all of the goodies we get to take alone. But we decided that even though we could keep going... we decided to head back. I've already bought the replacement refrig and scheduled the takeout and install for the week we return.

But, our adventures will resume soon after all is installed and working!!!! This time rather than mountains and higher elevation (Show Low is approx. 6,600) we want water!!! Lots and lots of water!!!!! So either north into OR or east to the TX shores. We'll have to wait until "we turn the engine on and see which way the winds blowing us!!!!!!!"

Sorry about the frig but you knew it was coming.

I'd recommend Oregon. Texas will be HOT and beaches not as good.

Jessie Honeyman State Park is a popular park near the Oregon Coast... We tent camped there years ago.

Concentrate in one area. Divide the state in quarters and then spend lots of time there in one or two quarters at the most.

If still in Show Low, run up the road to Tailor. When there you can visit the museum, but you should eat at Trappers! This is a small diner next to the post office. Good food, and great pie. Order the senior portion meal so there is room for the pie.

We went to Silverton CO area for over 50 years (I wasn't very old when we started) and it is beautiful. A couple of passes from the south and Durango and a really nice drive from the North but not really for a newbie or inexperienced mountain RV driver. Elevation about 8500 ft. Great jeep trails. National Park CG we went to had a fire last summer so temporally closed. Reservations a MUST at commercial campgrounds. Mountains, lakes, and streams.

Silverton and Ouray areas. Silverton is above 9000 feet, gorgeous and cool. Nearby to Showlow, I recommend a scenic drive to Big Lake, also above 9000 feet. There are some great campgrounds around Big Lake, although they are dry camping. Potable water is available at the dump station.
