What are the light bulbs for?

There is a light bulb to the left of every forum board. They all appear the same to me, I see no difference between any of them. What is their function?
Yes, I've been a member since 2002 and never asked before.

A "lit" bulb=unread new threads for you in that Forum. A "dark" bulb=no new threads.

I'll agree, the difference is very, very subtle. I have a hard time telling the difference, I even tried changing the screen resolution thinking it was me. I think the lit bulbs were brighter on the old platform.

When I looked at the bottom it indicated that the light bulbs show if there are new posts on that subject or not

For some of us older folks they are practically useless this way. Perhaps they could be changed to light and black or some other noticeably different colors.
