WHAT is with these reservation sites??
Trying to make a reservation for August, come in on a Saturday, leave on Wednesday. This is for Iowa State Parks.
Reservation website won't allow a Saturday night booking without a Friday night booking too.
I've run into this in other federal and state campgrounds, Army COE, various public campgrounds. Is this a ReserveAmerica or Recreation.gov policy or what? It is stupid. So they're going to miss out on a four day reservation so that they can get a two day weekend reservation?
Gotta be a government thing.

Your signature and your posting show your love of government, so I won't try to tell you anything you won't believe. You might try making reservations directly on the phone with the campground office, if possible. (different agencies have different policies) You could reserve from Friday through the weekend, or from Sunday evening when many campgrounds have openings for the following week.

Don’t blame the reservation site as they do what the campground requires. Booking a Saturday night start almost guarantees Fri will be unused, except for a walk up one nighter.

Last summer I stayed at the state campground in Knoxville, IA They had 5 to 10 campsites that you COULD NOT reserve. It was "first come, first serve" and you could stay a maximum of 14 days and I don't think there was a minimum number of nights. If you could call the campground host and inquire if they also have Non-reservable sites. Oh, and let them know you're a vet, it's $2.00 off the daily rate.

The thing is, I spent an hour looking at various sites, finally picked one and when I went to reserve it, THEN they tell me I have to reserve a Friday night too.
Would it kill them to place this info up front on the campground page so you see it before wasting an hour of your life?

We have run into the can't make a reservation starting on a Saturday before even at private parks. If we have to travel during the peak camping times we always try and schedule so we arrive Thursday and leave Sunday. Its just part of the wonderful world we live in.

Just pay for an extra night. If you spread that out over four days, does it really add that much per day?

May or may not work. Some campgrounds will unreserve the site if you don't show for the first day.
He make not be able to be there Fri.

No, I suppose not. It's just the stupidity of it that gets me. And that site will sit vacant 1 night anyway. But, they'll get their money...

I don't see how they can if it's paid in full.

Many parks aren't interested as much in the revenue as trying to allow as many people enjoy the park as possible. Unless you notify the camp office that you will be there on Saturday, they might give the vacant Friday night spot to another camper.

The chances of someone wanting your unreserved Friday night without being able to stay the weekend are pretty slim. Consider yourself lucky they had any spots at all. Nothing is available for any weekend in Oregon or Washington until September. And even weekdays are hard to find in most state parks except the few that do not accept reservations.

Sticks and bricks hotels in major resort areas often do the same, particularly in Vegas. They either will not permit a Saturday night check in or they will surcharge that night (often a 50% or higher surcharge). . . they also do the same with a check out on a Saturday.
