So, I gather the sound is NOT a malfunction warning of some sort? Or at least not one the repair tech knows about? There are two fans in most modern fridges, one in the rear wall to circulate chilled air inside, and one outside to assist moving air over the external heat exchanger. Could one of those fans be whining periodically? In Energy Star fridges, those fans cycle independently and may even be variable speed, thus minimizing power consumption. Other than the compressor itself, those are the only moving parts that could make a noise.
