My understanding is that handguns not on the 'approved ' list are grandfathered for current CA residents, but you cannot 'import' them into the state, even if you are a private party.

Hope this helps from CA DOJ:
Effective January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice. Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement.

You can import your guns with you. You can do private party transfers. It's all about taxes to make the gun list. Those that are removed often are because they won't pay the registration tax. I have several guns with 10+ magazines. Rural California areas are very pro gun.

California the land of Fruits and Nuts. Been here for 62 years and still don't know where they all came from but wish they'd go home.
Over Taxed, Over Regulated, the only thing that's not Illegal in the crap hole of a state is being and Illegal.
Where'd all the Liberal idiot's come from???

Son and DIL both LEO's in So Cal. He's SWAT, she's Patrol. For the last four years they've both been VERY worried about California government plans to rob/ steal/ reduce their retirements ( which they paid into) to pay for social programs. They work horrible hours, almost never off on the same shifts, under paid/ overworked /constantly in danger on their jobs, and make us tremble at every late night phone call. He says the minute they can draw retirement they are out of there. We will go to visit, but leave So Cal as soon as possible. Love No Cal however, only wish wasn't run by the same State House. The only worse state to live on IMHO is Illinois. We've had more Governors imprisoned than any state, our credit rating is one if worst, and we are about broke. That's why we left. So for the bashers out there there are more poorly run states than just California. Common denominator greedy/incompetent politicians, which this country seems to have a excess of.
Rant over--flame suit on!!

Ah, I stand corrected, the restriction mostly involves sales. Thanks for the info.

Despite warnings, this thread has repeatedly drifted off topic and is therefore being closed.
