Window A&E awning pull strap
OK, don't want to sound stupid or anything but I just bought replacement awning pull strap, and I thought it would be easy replacing them, but after I removed the first screw I stopped not wanting to screw anything up, I have a A&E awning so can anyone explain the procedure in replacing the awning pull strap, my first attempt my finger got ate by the recoil assembly.

I'm not the greatest responder, but since nobody else has tried to help, I will. On my A&E combo slide/window awning, I had to drill an access in one side of the strap groove, at an angle. On My A&E 9000 awning (I don't have one anymore so can't go look) I had to remove something at the groove end before I could slide the strap in. (My DW used some nylon strapping from somewhere and sewed it over the 1/4" cord to make our own pull straps.) In no case was I in any danger from the spring mechanism as you described. Are you sure you are inserting it in the correct slot?
Hope this helps you.

We have replaced several and never removed a screw. We do it together with one person rolling the awning out until it is completely deployed. While one of us holds it the other slides the awning strap (it should have a piece of plastic that is about 3 inches long) into the groove on the end of the awning and then on down to the center most portion of the awning. The groove cannot be seen unless you completely deploy the awning. When it is in position, the piece of plastic will be in the groove on the awning and hidden. My suggestion is to pull out a small one (like over a bathroom window) and check it out.

Thanks for the feed back, I think I saw that slit on the patio awning but was unable to locate the same one on my window awning, I guess I will look again, and see if with my wife help can locate it.

OK just looked at it, and the bells end piece what ever it is called doesn't not allow anything to go into that slot, that end section must have to be removed in order to get access to the required grove.
I saw on instructions on another site that a hole must be drilled in that grove on other types but not on the A & E. So unless I still confused.

hmm...I know on ours the slit is hidden until the awning is completely deployed. You might try to call them and ask about it.

called them
Well I did contact them, and like you they said that the slots should line up and I have two options, take the awning apart to realign the slots or to drill a hole and install the pull down strap in that manner, so the hole it is.

Good answer. I drilled holes in the cap of mine to access that grove several years ago. It has worked like a charm since then.

So you drilled a hole in the outside cap and not it the slot itself?

Yes. My main awning has a slot that a strap rides in with an opening at one end. I just drilled a similar access in the window awning cap. Maybe had to do some cutting to make it a slot opening and not just a hole in the cap.
