Windshield Woes
Windshield Woes!!!!
Anyone else ever have to replace a motorhome windshield? 🫣🤦🏼*♀️
We upgraded our motorhome shades to Auto-Motion day/night shades in 2022. First let me say I absolutely love them! They were expensive but well worth it and our 2006 bus looks so fresh and modern now but….
August 2022- The front shade was put in a little too close to the windshield and when the bus flexed (as they are meant to do)the metal frame hit the glass and busted the driver’s windshield. Our bus has a split windshield so it was just cracked on one side. Anyway, that was really the installers error so off we went back down to Florida where we bought the shades. We wanted to have them adjust the shade so it wouldn’t touch the glass again. We also wanted to let them see the damage first hand so they would hopefully agree to pay for the windshield. They were great. Fixed everything and reimbursed us for the Windshield! I highly recommend Custom CoachWorks in Ormond Beach Florida if you are in need of any renovations. They were professional and personable every step of the way!
Since we had to go from north Georgia back down to Florida we worked with Nationwide RV Glass (dba Avid Auto Glass) and they contracted with a glass company in Daytona to install the new windshield.
Well….the windshield guy in Florida tore our windshield gasket installing the new windshield. Instead of owning up to that and telling us, he covered it up with glue and black caulk. It was on the very top and couldn’t be seen from the ground so his deception worked just long enough for us to get home.
September 2022- Unfortunately that caulk couldn’t hold the gasket together enough to support the weight of the windshield and keep it in place. Because it wasn’t properly inserted, the next time we drove the bus the windshield started sliding out.
We spent most of September trying to reach Nationwide RV Glass/Avid Auto Glass and get them to help us. Since the windshield we had paid them to provide and install was literally sliding out, we thought they would assist. They were horrible! Gave us the run around for three weeks. We reached out to our insurance company (Progressive) and couldn’t even get them to answer the dang phone. When we finally got them, guess what? NO HELP!! That’s right, they will not cover anything. We will be switching to another insurance company ASAP!
October 2022 - We finally got Nationwide RV Glass to agree to have the windshield reinstalled. We found a good windshield guy but by then the weather had started to turn and we had monsoon rain.
In late October we finally had a dry day. That’s when we discovered why the windshield wasn’t staying in. Our new glass guy called to let us know that the windshield gasket was torn by the previous glass guy. So we had to order a $450 gasket and wait for it to be shipped from the west coast.
By the time that got to Georgia it was raining again….then we spent 3 weeks trying to get the Glass company who contracted with the Florida installer to stand behind their commitment. NEVER do business with Nationwide RV Glass / Avid Auto Glass!!! They are the WORST!
Between Thanksgiving and christmas the new glass guy broke the other side of the windshield! So he had to order a replacement for that. Of course before he could get it in a record setting freezing cyclone bomb hit.
By the time the glass guy called to say that he had finally gotten both windshields put back in it was Christmas and it was cold again….so he had to wait until temps got over 50 to glue the windshield and let it set up.
It finally got warm enough and we went to get our bus back in early January 2023. When we picked it up a screw had backed out of the shade and on the way home it fell down on one side and almost hit and broke the windshield again!
It’s just really been the “perfect storm” with our Motorhome windshield. They put in thousands of auto-motion RV shades with no problems but this one time🤦🏼*♀️🤷🏼*♀️🫣.

I don't think I like those window shades. I doubt they are worth the hassle. I like my normal curtains. I see you found out about Progressive the same way I did. They are a very very shady company. They will never see another dollar from me. Geico is 1000 times better.

Our 2013 Bus came with those auto Day/Night shades. They were a big improvement over the manual shades and the curtains we had on previous coaches. After 5 or 6 years we had to replace the motors. They were especially nice when driving into the rising or setting sun. Just push a button and safely adjust the position on the go. You will love them.

RV windshields can be a mess. We caught a rock coming home from Ouray, Colorado one year and it busted the passenger side windshield. So the insurance company found someone that could install the windshield, and we took it to them. Then we get a call a week later that their installer broke the new glass trying to put it in and they had to order another one. The insurance company then said, if the 2nd glass broke then they would not be providing any additional assistance. !?!$?! What? Your installer, your glass, your windshield breakage coverage, what's the deal? The rep said, "we can't just continue buying windshields if they keep breaking." lol. Luckily the 2nd one didn't break when they installed it. I now have a crack on the driver side, down below the sight line, and I'm not looking forward to getting it replaced. Hope you're having better luck now with the glass and the shades...

First of all, why would you or the installer expect your issuance company to pay for damage done by the installer? They should have their own liability insurance.

When I called progressive with a cracked windshield they asked if I wanted them to find an installer and I told them I knew of one local. I gave progressive the installers name and they sent them the windshield. The installer came to our house and installed it. I had never done business with the installer before and my insurance did not go up.
