17 years ago when I first started full time RVing in a 36 foot Class A, I was worried about where I'd go, where I'd park so I'd call and make reservations after planning out my travel route. Eventually, learned that I didn't need to do that because very often I'd end up pulling into an RV park, discovering I just didn't want to stay there, and pulling out and trying to find somewhere else. Luckily, that wasn't too often.
But what I learned is that RV parks tend to cluster together. So if you search online (Wifi is and was for me always a requirement for successful travel), plan your trip to arrive in an area between 3-4, 5 at the latest. Have your GPS set for your 1st choice and then know where your 2nd and 3rd choices are located just in case. I travel Sunday thru Thursday in order to hit a park when they almost always have spaces.
Now days, I don't do much planning, and rarely make reservations UNLESS I'm traveling around a holiday, or into a crowded area near a big city. I tend to stay for a week or more, and tend to plan trips to smaller towns, like in the 30 K population numbers. (I've actually forgotten it was a holiday week occasionally so sometimes I end up traveling during a holiday, normally I wouldn't).
About holidays...best to arrive at a park a week in advance (though I've been successful arriving the day before), and stay a week! So you're there before the holiday as parks tend to get really crowded. On the other hand, there are times you will find that someone might cancel and you can get their reservation. Don't count on that too often unless you enjoy spending the night at Walmart.
