Automatic steps

We just purchased a 2013 Winnebago Vista and we are having an issue with the automatic steps. When the door is opened and the steps eject, the motor continues to run loudly for about 4 seconds after they are completely extended. It worked fine when we first used them. We have lubricated everything but it has not helped. I'm wondering if it's possible that the gear slipped a tooth and the motor doesn't recognize the stop position. Any thoughts?

Thoughts only.

You may have two issues. First, the module that controls the extension of the steps, and also stops the extension when resistance is met, may be bad causing the motor to continue receiving power.

Second, the fact the motor continues to run may indicate a stripped gear. I'm not familiar with the mechanism other than visual inspection and there doesn't appear to be a "clutch" set up of any kind--just direct gear drive. Could be wrong, but these are just my thoughts.

Try to look under the steps--carefully, from a side position so you don't get crushed by the extention--and when they deploy and the the motor continues to run, see if you notice what is moving and if there is any obvious slipping of motor shaft in the gears. You may also see the motor shaft entering a "transmission" housing. If the motor shaft is turning but the steps are fully extended, the problem may be inside that transmission housing--the location of a stripped gear, possibly, or the shaft connector to the transmission may be slipping.

Welcome to iRV2

Sorry you're here with problems .

Knowing the step brand would help and that may require going under the coach to look at the controller. Kwikee is common .
The controller senses the motors amperage draw to shut down , there are no external sensors on the mechanism . So the controller will continue to power the motor until the power use spikes .
From your description , a broken tooth in the drive mechanism is the most probable problem.
Removing the drive is not difficult , but as always use caution, and safety equipment when under the coach.
Here's a pdf on troubleshooting non-operating steps , there will probably be a U tube video on the gear repair.

Do a youtube search for rv step repairs.

You'll get a great Idea how things work and what to look for
