Bob From Connecticut
Hi all,
I'm Bob, from Eastern Connecticut.
I've been a camper for a very long time...!
My first memory of camping is from when I was 5 years old in England. My folks didn't have a lot of money back then but they had an adventurous spirit and an old (1930 in 1956) Morris Oxford and a box (cargo) trailer. We lived in a small town outside of Bath and my Dad decided we were going to travel to the seaside in Cornwall. He packed up the trailer with all the supplies, blankets, gear and left for our adventure. Of course, like any 5 year old, I fell asleep in the back seat of that old car before we got out of the neighborhood.
The destination was Devises on the Cornish coast. The year before this, Devises was hit by a flash flood, which devastated the countryside and demolished hundred of acres of farmland. It sent boulders and garden planting, sliding down the hillside of town.
For my Dad's part of this adventure, he found a great roadside spot to park the car and trailer and set up for the night. He parked on a service road that led to a huge field at the base of one of those hills that was scoured the year before. During the night, my folks had set up camp Dad used the cargo trailer as our sleeper and a canvas tarp for a roof. But, apparently, the gardens that were washed away by the deluge, the year before, were a lot of Strawberry gardens. So, what really stood out in my memory, was waking up in the middle of a huge field, that was filled with Strawberries.
I literally woke up in Strawberry fields! True story!
But, that was where my bug for camping started... Next was tents, then a VW bus and a Chevy conversion van. I even made a camper out of an old Jeep mail truck (the thing looked like an ice cream truck and you had to stand up on the right hand side to drive it).
Finally came a travel trailer... Had a boat with a full cabin and galley for a while - (wet camping!) Then a Class A Coachmen for a few years...
We sold that a couple of years back and now we're on the hunt for a Travel Trailer... (I'm looking a restoring a retro, but my wife wants new and shiny...)
Maybe there'll be a compromise
My search brought me here when I was looking for information on a 1970 StarCraft - StarCruiser, I saw on FaceBook Market Place. (I still would mind having that to fix up...)
Anyway, hoping to connect here and swap tales from the road.
