Can I really do this?

Hi there everybody! I am 56 single and live with my cat in a sticks and bricks home in Ky. I've been retired for 2 years and am going to sell my home and buy an RV. Shewww, I said it so that makes it real...hahha I am still considering what kind I want but I think I want a 5th wheel toy hauler (room for the bike). That might change a thousand times before it actually happens!! What is the one thing you wish you had known or done before you started this adventure?

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined us!

Lots of things to consider about buying your first RV, such as whether you will be doing a lot of traveling or mostly local camping with occasional trips, etc. Hope you find the perfect rig for your needs!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your search and final decision.

We have no regrets. Not a single one. Although one thing we specifically don't regret is the amount of time and effort we spent on research before the purchase. Ended up with the right rig at the right time because of it - for both of the TT's we've owned.

Enjoy the adventure!

Welcome !!

If you must use the money from your house sale to buy you're RV I would rent one for a month first to make sure you really want to do it. RV Depreciation is extreme and if you change your mind you may not be able to go back to a sticks and bricks with what you will get out of your rig.

There are many good folks here to offer help and advice, glad you could join the party

Can you do this? Sure you can. Look around you. Look at all the big burly truckers and coach drivers. Did they start as experts? No they didn't, they started as nervous as you are feeling. It comes down to training and practice. Suggest you take a RV training course and then practice. Use a deserted parking lot and some cones. Small cardboard boxes work too.

What would I have done differently?
Lots of things. Would have retired 10 years earlier! Bought a class A instead of fooling around with TT's and the fiver. Lol.

The assorted trailers etc have been good but none were suitable for full timing.
The fiver I have now is too small for two people. Ok for weekends and the annual vacation which is what we bought it for. Now we are moving on and looking at 40+ ft of DP

Good luck.
Great to have you aboard. Keep posting.

Welcome to IRV2.
This is the place to ask your questions.........I know that at this stage, you may not know the questions to ask....but read the posts and you will get an education!!
One of the previous posts pointed out that you should do your best to determine if the change you are considering is right for you.....once you buy the RV of your dreams the value drops like a rock. It is a hard pill to swallow. If you are pulling a trailer, or 5th wheel, do make sure you have enough truck....a mistake I made early on!
Are you relatively handy with fix-it stuff?.........hope so because stuff breaks often as you bounce down the road........good news is that there are lots of folks here who are willing and able to offer advise.
Best of luck to you.

Jealous ! the wife won't let go of HER house and I sorta like her, so....

We went thru the gambit of EVERY rv type starting with tents all the way to Class A!
but what WE like and you do, will be different, but here goes...

Class A all the way for the type of traveling we do... be relaxed and cool when you get there and don't necessarliy have to 'setup' when we get there, can do it at our leisure!

Be self contained, with a genny to keep it comfortable so you don't have to set it up and leave for 3 hours while the 100+ degree rv cools down !

Class A can carry a motorcycle on a lift and still tow your car behind,

also, consider a good used coach that can be a lot less trouble than a new one !

(I had the displeasure of buying a new upper end 5'er that they ended up buying back after 18 months of horror!)

good luck on your adventure... and make it an adventure - remember, it's your decision, don't let others make your decision for you.

Welcome and glad to have you here.
First, We have never bought a new RV and don't expect to do so in the future.
I am a retired mechanic so can do most of my own maint and repairs.
Now for my opinion. ( and that is what it is. My opinion and what works for us )
I would advise against selling your house and jumping into the RV lifestyle if you have never RV'd before. Rent one a few times and see if it works for you first. This is especially true if you will be using the funds from the house to buy the RV. The value of the RV will drop like a rock and you will lose a substantial amount of the money. Don't make an irreversible decision based on emotion. You need to consider worst case scenarios as well as beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Breakdowns, medical issues, weather catastrophes, etc. We do not RV full time. Both DW and I don't want to give up our home base, workshop and stuff. Love to use the RV but need a place to revert to that is our own, near family. We have a very comfortable class A and a Wrangler toad and that suits us perfectly. The RV you choose needs to suit you and your needs. One caution I would give is that if you decide on a trailer don't buy the bare minimum tow vehicle. Buy heavier duty than you need.
You did say you were leaning toward a toy hauler for your bike. I guess the question there is what bike IE: weight and size.
Good luck in your quest, do your research and we hope to see you on the road.

Welcome, I'm sure that whatever you do will be right for you. One person's love for something may not be another. Being happy in life is important.

Two Years can go fast or slow for some, as it all depends on your feelings about what it is for yourself.
