Cart before the Horse

New to IRV and RV-ing but just bought our 2011 321RES Cougar High Country with the intention of full-timing it next summer. Sold home and all that would not fit in our trailer. The consequence of doing so has made us minimalists and we love it! Thanks so much for the many posts here... it is a wealth of information! After building a RV site on a piece of property in MN, we are living the dream. Just need a good horse and are really intrigued with the idea of purchasing a 7.3 diesel SUV Excursion to pull it, rather than a truck. Anybody have experience with this? Loaded weight of trailer will be about 10k pounds.

My brother had a Excursion with the v-10. He loved it. Problem now is they quit building them in 2005. May be hard to find a low mileage one. I looked at a couple for myself and they all had 200,000 plus miles on them and were over priced.

Welcome, we're in MN also. Sold everything in 2011, however house did not sell so we rented it out. We are at this time building a deluxe RV site on friends property so as to spend part of each summer in MN. Where is your site located?

Since you are just going full time it would seem the best move would be to buy a new truck rather than a used one so you would have many trouble free miles. If you buy used with 150k you will soon run into major maintenance expenses. The first 150k are always much less expensive than the second 150k.
Get a Super Crew f250 or a 2500 Mega Cab and you will be set. I know you are not even thinking of a 1/2 ton!
Good luck in this new adventure.

Thanks all for the input...retirement is 1.5 yrs away so excuse the replies that come after work. Was really looking for the 7.3 diesel monster that gets that 500k with little maintenance. If I bought one that had 150k on it or so.... could I live long enough to hit 500k? Guess the real question I have about the Excursion is comfort and practicality. Do you guys all drive your own trucks and hook up in a town for dinner that may be 30 miles or so? Jump in the 9 passenger Excursion...we just need a designated driver. Also..how convenient is it to have an open bed truck vs a SUV?
