Question City Water or Water Tank

Newbie here. 2010 Four Winds Chateau G19,

How does the City (pressurized) Water work with using the water in the fresh water tank?
  • If I connect with city water, does the tank fill?
  • Do I have to switch a valve when changing from city water to tank water?

There are two basic systems for using "city water" to fill a fresh water holding tank.

My travel trailer uses a "gravity fill" system. Insert a hose from city water into the fill hole and run water in until it overflows.

Some RV's use a valve system in a "wet bay" to fill the holding tank. Some have both systems.

Connect a hose from the city water to the "city water" fitting. Set the holding tank fill valve to fill the tank. Shut the fill valve back to "off" when tank is full.

Disconnect the city water hose and turn the 12 volt water pump "on" to use the holding tank water.

Other than shutting off the fill valve as noted above, you do not usually need to switch a valve between city water and holding tank. You can usually leave the city water connected and turn the pump on at the same time. Water will flow from the highest presser source.

There is a check valve in the city water system to prevent pump water from flowing back into a lower presser city water system.

I wish you good luck and happy trails ahead!

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined us!

Most RVs have a changeover valve that switches the freshwater source from the internal piping to the freshwater tank.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

You have two sources of water. The freshwater tank has a pump which fills the lines up to the faucets including the water heater. The city water inlet fills the same lines via a tee in the system. There is a one way check valve at the city water connection that prevents back flow from your system into the parks system. There is a check valve on your water pump that prevents back flow from the city water into you fresh water tank. Some higher end coaches have the capability to fill the fresh water tank from the city water inlet, but most do not.

Thanks all!
To Old Biscuit, I got a brief manual with the RV, thanks for the full manual!
For my RV it looks like I can not fill the fresh water tank from the city water, but a small hose with the end cut off did the job through the gravity fill.
