Evaluating the RV World
I recently found IRV2 as I was looking for some information on pulling a TT with my ordered, but yet to be received, Ford Expedition Max (Limited, Tow Package, 4x4, etc.). My in-laws full timed in a Dolphin class A for about a decade, but they are now gone as is the rig. They did pass down their Thousand Trails pass account. We have been maintaining this membership for a while and because of our location (southern Ohio) and work responsibilities, have not used it. My camping experience is mostly car camping (boy scouts in the 1960s-1970s and more recently with our church group where dads/granddads take the kids on campouts), but most of my camping experience is with boots and a backpack. This is a bit different from car camping and light years different from an RV.
My wife and I are interested in getting into an RV and potentially going full time in a few years once the work world kicks us out. We are exploring our options at this point and these range from a Micro Minnie size rig to a 37’ Super C. Neither of us are interested in a Class A, but we are exploring the rest of the options. I am interested in being able to boondock, so I am looking for something that will go off road fairly well, but not rock climbing. Essentially, go where the Expedition can go. My wife is not quite as adventurous but is still open to forest service roads & gravel roads. I tend to be on either end of our size range and my wife is more in the middle, but she prefers a motorized unit rather than a trailer. I would be fine with either a small TT, a big 5er, or a Super C. The Expedition could either pull a small trailer or be a toad for a Super C, but I would change to a F450 dually for a large 5er. That is the only reason I am leaning against a 5er. Until we go full time, we are quite involved in our grandkids lives and we need the third row and cargo space of the Expedition Max.
I have been lurking for about a week and have participated in a couple of threads, mostly asking and learning. Alaska is the only state I have not been to and I really want to drive to Alaska in either 2020 or 2021. I would prefer to have a rig set for that trip even if it is not a long term rig. That trip pretty much demands hard-sided sleeping accommodations and my wife is not interested in sleeping in the Expedition. I would consider a used TT for the trip and either keep it or sell it and upgrade after the trip. I don’t want to go all in on a Super C or large 5er until we sell the house so we can put that money into the rig. That is still a few years away as we are only in our early 60s.
I have already learned a lot on this site and look forward to learning and participating more in the future.
