Thumbs up Full-timer on a genealogy quest!

Hi all!

I'm in a 2015 Toyota Tundra SR5 Crew Cab 4x4 w/ tow package pulling a Heartland Mallard M28. Just big enough for me and two dogs.

We're on a two-year journey to the heartland on a genealogy quest to figure out what happened to make my 4th GG change the spelling of his last name and not pass down the lore to his grandchildren about his father, who became a famous Revolutionary War hero.

Was it the manner in which his mother died? Did he blame his father?

Was it because his desires for new land in Indiana could be squashed if Andrew Jackson may hold it against him that he was a hated rival's oldest son?

Who knows.... but the lineage broke apart and people like my father never knew the truth. So... we're on a quest for whatever truth we can ferret out from files, records, and conversations that you just can't get from the Internet. And, so far, so good!

Thanks for sharing your great information and help with RV'ing on these iRV2 forums. Clueless newbies (to full timing) like me need all the help we can get!

Good luck with your search. Genealogy is fascinating and time consuming although less so than in years past.

The changes in name spelling when you are going back that far, is simply that many, if not most, in that time period were illiterate. The spelling changed because the county clerk spelled it that way when recording a document.

Your Genealogical Journey

Hi Jana from Canada!

I started my family’s journey about 15 years ago with a Civil War certificate of promotion. My GG grandfather’s promotion from private to corporal in the 1st Michigan Engineers hung downstairs in my Dad’s Winnipeg rec room for years. I started out by going to the National Archives in Seattle, Wa. From some of Alexander’s information, I was able to go back many generations to discover that my family came to Plymouth Mass from England/Scotland in 1638. Fortuitously, a book had been written about the family back then, and soon I was able to trace the family through the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War.
There are plenty of answers out there if you use your imagination, and it sounds like you have the time and the will. Government documents, censuses, newspapers, court documents etc all provide small clues to keep you hungry for more answers. And extended family can also provide clues.

Best of luck. It is a lot of fun.

Cheers!

DJ
