Hi everyone

We don't have an RV yet but are looking at getting a 5th wheel in about 2 years time and going on the road for a couple of years (at least). We've joined to learn as much as we can about RVing in advance.

Cheers

Thanks RV Wizard

I have to get through winter before I can enjoy summer - we just had the shortest day so winter has officially started here - I can't find a shivering smiley!

I've been looking through the posts and have already found lots of helpful stuff. Looking forward to learning more

I just typed out a long reply and its disappeared -

As far as I know, only www.hodgerv.co.nz make 5th wheels here. One firm will do them as a specialised order and we have several large caravan and motorhome manufacturers.

5th wheels seem to be becoming more popular, possibly as the older generation (me included) decide they want to retire and take to the road in comfort. Until recently I had never heard of them.

Several firms are now importing them from American and Canadian manufacturers. Some have them converted before import, others do the conversion here. I believe the wiring and gas fittings need to be changed and the ones converted by the manufacturer are sometimes reversed so that the door is on the opposite side - to suit the fact that we drive on the left of the road.

Weight and size can be an issue - our campgrounds are often small, our roads can be narrow and very winding. Vehicles which can tow the heavier rv's are very expensive and the supply seems to be limited to the few American utes (pickups?) which are brought in by individuals.

I'm a beginner and this is just what I've worked out so far - it might not all be accurate!

Cheers

Jude,
Welcome to iRV2. You will find many resources here, and you just might make a friend or two as well.

If interested, why not pop in to the iRV2 Chatters chat room. We are there just about every evening starting around 8:30pm eastern. It is a fun group and many of us have met several times in various places around the country.

Thanks Skip, I suspect that 8.30pm Eastern time would be working hours for me but I'll go online and see if I can work out what it would be here.

Cheers

OK, I checked and it seems that its about 8.30pm eastern time right now - and its 12.36pm here. So normally I would be at work but I'm having a few days off.

Next step - find out how to get to the chat room

welcome aboard.

To get to a chat room, just follow the links under Features on the home page.

you may have to load some additional support programs and you do need a reasonably high speed connection. It'll kill a dial up.

Jude,

Glad to have you on board. I'll be in NZ later this year. Maybe we could meet and I could bore you to death with camping stories. I can pretty much talk about this subject non-stop.

I'll be staying primarily in Auckland but I will be taking trips up to Wellington, down to Christchurch and several places in between.

That would be cool. Maybe we could meet up for a meal somewhere in Wellington.

Another silly newbie question - LOL

How come this post shows up in the New Member Check In (which is where I posted it) and in the 5th wheeler general discussion? I am sure I didn't post it twice
