Holiday Rambler doesn't charge chassis batteries on shore power
I have a 2002 Holiday Rambler Endeavor 38PBDD that doesn't charge the chassis batteries on shore power. I've looked through various threads on several RV forums, and didn't find any answers, so I wrote to Holiday Rambler, and received a response from Frank Phillips, Technical Advisor for Allied Recreation Group, Monaco RV. It turns out that the 2002 Endeavor DOES NOT charge the chassis batteries on shore power or generator, but that there is a fix that costs about $60 that will enable the inverter to do so. I found this information so valuable that I decided to share it with you all. The fix is to replace the "IRD" (isolator relay delay) with a "BIRD" (bi-directional isolator relay delay). The part is available online at about $60.00, Intellitec Part #00-839-000. See the attached PDF files that explain the whole thing. I have ordered the BIRD and will be upgrading my Endeavor so I can keep the chassis batteries online and monitor their condition. Anyone with questions, please get in touch with me.

Seems strange. So the only way they get charged is running the engine? Something doesn't sound right. Is there a solar setup that charges them at present? I don't have this coach but the subject sure grabbed my attention. You could also add a Trickle-Start for less money and it would do the job.

My house charger does not charge the start battery either.
Its common in cars and trucks not to have a charging source, while parked. Why is this strange ?

At first, I read the post and confused it with not charging house batteries...so then I added the sentence about the Trickle-Start.

Ahh, got ya.
The Trickle Start is a great fix.
I used a Cyrix combiner. It's a by-directional relay. I connected it to both sides of the Boost solenoid.

Here's what Frank wrote back when I asked him:
Depends on what year and model of coach you are talking about and not all used the BIRD, other systems were used. I suggested that to you as the easiest replacement to what was in your coach. For the most part prior to 2008, the higher end coaches (Signature, Executive, Dynasty, Navigator, etc.) had a charging system that operated both ways, the lower line coaches did not. After 2008 pretty much everything charged both ways.

2002 with same problem of chassis battery not charging on shore power
I just purchased a 2002 Endeavor and I also have the problem of chassis batteries not charging on shore power. I’m also not sure if they charge when running the genset. And I don’t know if the house batteries charge while driving.
I do have a couple of questions, exactly where do I find the IRD. Where can I get a BIRD, and how do I hook up the BIRD?
