I guess we're jumping in with both feet!
We will soon own an 1996 Thor Residency and intend to "mostly" be in it full time. We are leaving Montana and going to OBX and the housing there is crazy so this was a good option. Though they don't allow RVs for full time residence on the island, we can spend two weeks here or there and then head back to my IL's place inland. We have done lots of youtube research, but I am up for any advice that you can give us!

Hello and welcome. Do yourself a favor and do some shake down runs on the rv before you head out. Testing all appliances and making sure everything is in good working order gives you the time now before you leave on your journey and have unexpected issues on the road to contend with.

First realize that you have a 26-year-old motor home. Things break down. Make sure the tires are not over 6 years old by the DOT date code stamped on the tire sidewall. Change all engine, transmission, and generator fluids. Check the roof caulking and windows for any leaks and repair all leaks. Check/service the brakes and wheel bearings. Make a couple of short shake down trips prior to your full commitment.
Have money set aside for repairs and maintenance. With the age of the RV, some of the things that break will not have repair parts available and may have to be replaced and re-engineered.
When you run into a problem, do not be afraid to get on this forum and ask for help. Provide as much information and photos with model numbers of the equipment with the issue. Odds are someone here will have the same issue and found a fix.

Great advice. Unfortunately we are in Montana and the Motorhome is in NC. But the inlaws will be giving it a good once over. We will have a week to check it all out at their house and move in before going for a two week dry camp trial run on Hatteras Island. (We have many friends there so if something goes very awry, we will be okay).
Thanks all for the great welcome! I have learned so much just reading already.

Thanks Ken! We know that there may be issues due to the age, but at $8,000 (and having been babied by it's owner) it was a perfect solution to our housing problem. We do plan to check all of the roof/window caulking before heading out. Thankfully my husband is a pretty handy guy and we know some folks who are pretty good with their mechanic/machinery skills. <3 Ministry helps you meet some pretty awesome people!
