In NC, they use DMV to collect personal property tax on vehicles. Your registration will reflect the county of registration, fire tax district, and municipality if needed. On renewal, you will have to have the safety inspection within 90 days prior to the registration date, and pay the registration and taxes to get your sticker. Your tag will show a date and year, and your registration card will give you a 15 day "grace period", but if you renew after the last day of the expiration month you will be assessed a $25 late fee.
