New 60 Year-Old First RV Newbie (Class A)

2000 Fleetwood Southwind 32V, 50th Anniversary Edition

Location: Tri-Cities, Washington State (the dry and sunshiny south central east side)

Hi All!

I'm a U.S. Navy retired Chief (ET), retired in 2005, most of my time spent on the east coast. The better-half and I have wanted to get an RV for a very long time, but between moving every 3 years to various parts of the country (and oconus), and $$ constraints, we never got one.

The wife decided now is the time to get one with me nearing my 2nd retirement (about 6 years). I was not permitted to say no...

A 5th wheel was out because we didn't want that combination and I didn't want to have to buy a powerful truck to pull it. Started looking at new class Cs and As, but I guess I was naÔve, but the prices were / are insane for anything larger than a pop-up trailer. Even used ones are going for ridiculous prices (guess it's the "covid effect"), plus anything decent / desirable are being bought up within minutes of being posted, a lot apparently being bought sight unseen.

The wife was looking on craigslist poking around and one had just popped up and she immediately called them. We were the first to call. We were told later there were about 20 calls after ours within hours, and people offering more money in cash if the sellers dumped us before the financing was completed. The sellers were the basic, nice, and decent type of people, the type of people that you feel good about buying from them.

We went over and immediately decided to buy it because it is in INMACULATE condition in nearly every respect, looked like it was barely used even though it is 21 years old.

Unfortunately the owner accidentally put all the original documentation and manuals with stuff going to goodwill. So now I'm on a desperate search to get manuals, factory service repair manuals, electrical schematics, etc...

Being a newbie, I won't be able to contribute / help others here for quite some time, but will be respectfully asking / pleading for help on various things I come across, almost exclusively because I have no documentation on the various systems to fall back on.

Now to get my profile and avatar set up...

Thanks!

Welcome Squidchief. We've had ours from new for the past 18 years and overall even with many issues like all owners get we've enjoyed it immensely, from our road warrior years working/school restrictions to in the past several years going on more and more extended trips.

Enjoy the journey and absolutely you'll find immense support here from some extremely knowledgable folks on the various systems as you encounter needs.

Happy travels, SD.

That is very generous of you to offer that stuff. I appreciate it more than you know. I am very mechanically and electrically inclined and have always done all my own auto work to include nearly everything either replaced or rebuilt or modified (except wheel alignments, balancing and auto transmissions), but hate to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to.

If you want to pm me on how to get the docs, that's great!

Thanks!

JyroCharlie,

Thanks to your pictures I was able to find everything that you had the paperwork for online in the pdf format because I knew now exactly what to look for. Thank you so very much!

The only thing I could not get is a manual for the Ventline range hood control panel. Switches are sticking so I'm going to be taking it apart here soon.

Thanks again!!
Norm

that whole vinyl strip with the switches pops out, it has spring clips on the inside edges. Pry it out. something like LPS lube may fix it

Cruising down 101 and all those sites looks like a fun time. Think about some sort of a tow vehicle and a tow bar, it makes the trips so much better. We have a Chevrolet Tracker 5 speed. you never know it's there.
