New Class A Owner Headed Across Country Soon!

Just picked up our first class A. Was previously a pop-up camper but have had other tow behinds. I will be traveling from Raleigh to Seattle in March in a 1999 Southwind 32V that we just bought locally.

The Rockies and the Cascades may be difficult to cross in March. We rarely tried trans-mountain trips any earlier than mid-April. Pay careful attention to the various pass weather reports.

We had three options. Snoqualmie Pass is Interstate 90 and has a max height of 3200 feet. It's all 4-lane freeway-type roads. Further north is Stevens (US-2) which reaches 4500' and is mainly 2-lanes. The most northerly is Washington Pass (SR-20), 5200' peak height. It has been extensively improved over the last few years and most of it is 4-lanes. It is often close between late October and early April as it gets too much snow to keep ploughing it.

The general rule is "the lower the max altitude, the better". Also, passes that are Interstate highways generally get more frequent snow removal than US or State roads.

Keep a very close eye on the weather, and travel in the daytime! Adjust your route if you need to, or wait the storm out! Rail!
