New fam from Toronto! Advice on a route & staying in parks?
Hi everybody!
We're a fam of 3 and they want to try out RVing this summer for 9 days August 11-20 somewhere in Ontario. We live about a half hour north of Toronto and are in search of peace, quiet, landscapes and natural phenomena. To relax once we're at a destination? Appreciate the landscape, campfires, fishing (only caught one fish...ever...but enjoy the quiet) canoeing/boating....
we're classic explorers and are excited to try this RV method on for size!
Anyways, I'll be posting about our proposed route and would appreciate any advice. Talk soon. Stay healthy!

Welcome to iRV2 .
From the west coast .
After 18 months of lock downs ( by August it'll be 18 months ) you and several thousand others will be looking to do the same ; get out and enjoy some isolation that doesn't involve four walls .
I'm thinking this will be a tall order, but let us know what kind of travel time your thinking of , 4/6/8 hours or a couple of days to access the spot .

I'll be watching for your posts. Definitely lots to see around the Georgian Bay area, Tobermory to Parry Sound, Sudbury areas. Or Algonquin or other areas of the province.
Just a quick note, there was a news article this past week (can't remember which TV network) saying that Provincial Park camping reservations were WAY UP, this season, especially at the popular Parks.

Hey thanks fir the welcome everyone!
We are leaning towards heading out to Thunder Bay and back. I posted a rough itinerary that we’re thinking of in the forum. I don’t know if it’s ambitious or do-able or if the parks we’re looking at are worth staying longer in, or if it’s too long between parks etc. So looking for advice.
I’ve done Georgian Bay and Algonquin/Ottawa and the Superior coast; but all on my own on a motorcycle. Things go faster...you can pass slower vehicles with ease, trucks move over often to let you go, fuel stops are fast and stopping to see something is super easy and fast. I’m trying to gauge how much ground we can expect to cover because as noted, my wife also found park spots are filling up fast. We can book them exactly 5 months in advance and we’re rolling out August 9-20. So the sooner we can nail down an itinerary the sooner we can plan what camp spots to try and get the day they are available.
Thanks again I’m glad I found this place!

I have only stayed at a few campsites North of you; one in Sudbury Carols Campground off the 400. It is small sites but easy access to fishing Sudbury and a lot of sight seeing in the area. Also have stayed at Tow of Marathon Campground. It is called Penn Lake were it is on the edge of town with a nice nature views. Lots to explore and see. On the edge of Lake Superior and lots of fishing.
I should make you aware that the campgrounds are already filling up for the summer in South Western Ontario. We have booked two locations in August and September; and getting some of the last spots. Book early or miss out. We have even booked out trip to Florida a month ago to ensure we get a spot.
Good luck and happy camping.

Hey WiseOtter (love that handle!).
If you enjoy fishing hubby and I have had great success at Nipigon. We boondock/dry camp by choice and desire, so stayed overnight there at the Marina area. They've in recent years added some RV spaces with hookups as a FYI.
As everyone has mentioned, due to COVID limiting folks travels other ways, many have turned to Camping/RVing to try to get some kind of escape from it all. Pent up demand with this pandemic has led to huge shortages and price hikes on everything outdoorsy it seems: CG Sites, Kayaks, SUPs, etc etc.
Just for you to file away, as a comfort back up in your planning box, in case there's somewhere you want to stop but no sites available here's some links we use for dry camping, propane, dumpstations and more: Ioverlander. com Freecampsites.net Campendium.com. Even some of the Walmart's that are signaged (city ordinance Kenora WM & Can Tire comes to mind), if you check with the management they say it's not enforced or you are OK to go ahead, so don't take all signage at face value without asking. Again just providing as a back up so you have some comfort if hard to find a site. Crownland is beautiful for options to dry camp as well which we do often this side of the border.
Happy Travels. SD

Hey thanks for the advice! The handle comes from a discussion about what kind of animal I’d look like when I get old. Old guys seem to look like animals...buzzards, turtles etc....
Yep we are aware of the demand and are ready to book our spots at 7am as they are available to book. Thanks for all the helpful tips still welcoming more till August this is going to be another great Goonie adventure for shore!!
