New, from where the West starts

Our comment on Google Plus
Hello community
Me and the wife are considering an RV in our near future. We are completely new to it. We have done tent camping in the past. One of the thoughts for changing is that if we get an RV now and get it paid for, we might want to move and live in it full time. So we are researching now for what we should look into getting or not get in an RV. Right now we are thinking on a 5th wheel rig. Any suggestions would be nice.

Research, research and research some more. Don't believe a word any RV or truck salesman tells you.
If you go fifth wheel, get a properly equipped truck.

Before committing to a purchase, you might consider renting for a week or two. You will find that RV folks in general are more than happy to discuss their experiences, so fellow guests at rv parks can be a great resource.

"Research" that and then some. we figure two+ years before we buy will make us informed.
"The Truck" it will be a Ford 350-450 dually, like Papaw use to say "If you are going to pull something pull it with a Ford and if you were going to haul it, buy a trailer - pulled by a Ford." There are somethings I will want done such as a 3 camera rearview mirror with the connection to a 4th camera on the back of the trailer. Truckbed light bar put in. Don't know about 4X4?

"Renting" We figured that with two years before purchase we would rent several times. And rent different manufacturers. Right now we are choosing Heartland as one of the choices, Redwood & DRV are also ones we want to know more about.
Getting into this there are so many decisions !!!

Hi folks! Welcome to IRV2! It's great to have you join us!
You've definitely come to the right place for a complete education in RV'ing! There's a lot of nice, friendly folks here eager to share their knowledge and experience, and great Moderators who are always fair and respectful! You just can't find a better deal than that!
Just post specific questions over in the appropriate areas of the forum for best results. Not many folks hang out here in the Welcome area.
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

You really don't need 4 X 4 but may have a hard time finding a 4 X 2. F-450 actually has tighter turning radius over F-350. 450 also will come with the stump-pulling 4:30 axle. We towed 36" Redwood with 2011 F-450 until we got the new MH. Loved the 450; the Redwood not so much. All new units will have some issues; the Redwood seemed to have more than most. Most DRV owners I've talked to seem really happy with their rigs.

If you are going to buy a 5th wheel. I would check the height of your PU bed and bed rails. Check the level of the 5th wheel on the lot. Check the height of the 5th wheel hitch. Make sure it is all going to match. Recently some PU manufactures have raised the sides of PU beds. I see 5th wheels going down the road totally out of level. Looks like the 5th wheel is going to launch off into space. Just check it all out before you buy the PU or 5th wheel.
MHs can have a generator that runs off of the gas or diesel tank. Nice feature.
I have had 3 TCs, 2 MHs, 1 5ver, 1 TT. I am now in a MH. My personal opinion. I towed my 5ver at 80 mph with no problems. I would never drive my MH or tow my TT at that speed and be comfortable. Maybe a diesel MH but never owned one. My 5ver had a generator but running on propane was pricey. It is all personal choice.

Thanks for the input, no we didn't consider height on the bed of the truck. There are many things we are trying to organize and sort out. I have been reading many other locations in this forum and another forum (so far there are only two forums that are helpful).
