Greetings to all of you. I'm a Northern Californian, still working but getting out soon. I'll be living full-time (one person plus a pet or two) in a very small trailer (small for boondocking maneuverability, gas mileage, and simplicity). Plan is to explore the Northwest, including Alaska, in summer, and the Southwest in the winter.

So, I'd been scanning craigslist for over a year, seeing what's available in my price range (limited funds) and deciding between a small Class C or a trailer. I think that if money was less tight I'd have gone for the Class C. I'd lived in one many years ago and loved how easy it was to drive, plus no hitching/unhitching.

My reasoning for going with a TT: Cheaper gas, towing, and repairs for a pick-up truck than for a motorhome. Plus the added storage space in the truck bed with a cap. And the flexibility of leaving the TT in camp while driving the truck to town.

I found an '83 Prowler TT, tiny, only 13' long, yet with all basic amenities: fridge, shower, flush toilet, heater. It cost $2,500, and I bought it. I knew it had water damage, but I wanted to see if I could deal with it. And I figure if it's too much for me, I can resell it.

Assessment: Extensive water damage. Entire rear wall was replaced by former owner last year. I can see plenty of signs of water damage on the walls and around windows, etc, but the floors and roof do not seem to have soft spots.

This leads me to hope that I can get by (ideally, I would buy a new trailer, but funds are limited so "getting by" is where I'm at) with killing all the mold I can reach while resealing everything. I might even drill some holes in the interior walls and spray mold-killer inside. Then patch the holes when it's all dried out.

If I do this, I'm making a huge assumption: That the trailer is structurally sound enough to hold up.

I would be so happy to hear your opinions.

Glad you joined us.

Even though funds might be limited. I would pay to have an inspection done it. Just like when you buy a house. If there is a structural problem then at least you'll find out where you stand. Hopefully it's not a money pit.

Hi Dawn,

Go to the vintage RV forum and post some pictures of the area you are talking about. It must be sealed from leaks or the mold issue will not be resolved. Take pictures of the outside and area of possible leaks along with the inside. Many of us have rebuilt TTs and MH and have lots of experience to pass on to you. Ask questions and good luck looking forward to seeing pictures.

Thanks everyone so much. I will go ahead and pay to have it assessed before I fall too much in love with it, and also get a few picks up in the vintage trailer forum. I feel better already, being in a group with so many experienced rvers.
